Footrests

When sitting on his jockey seat, my eight year old son has a grab handle on the rear of my jockey seat to hold on to, but he sometimes feels a little un-nerved in a chop, I think it is a combination of sitting high up above the tubes, and the fact that he cannot reach the deck with his feet to stabilize himself, my first thoughts are to fit a couple of small stainless grab handles each side of his jockey seat for him to rest his feet on.

I would be interested to know if anyone else has had the same problem and what they fitted to overcome this, is there anything else on the market I could use?

I had the manufacturer supply footrests for this very function, (our boy was 8 at the time) however as he was not at the factory when the final fit out took place, I took them home with the intention of fitting them with my son sitting on the pod for measurement,as I'm speedy at things like this,he's now grown out of needing them so they are sitting in the box they came in.

The trouble with footrests is that they will be in the wrong place as he grows.

What about stirrups? They are called jockey seats for a good reason!!! You could rig somthing up out of webbing and attach it under the seat base or whatever.

May be a thin pad on the seat could be an idea, it would help him reach the deck, he would be sitting lower and you wouldn't need to drill the seat, and you can keep the other one for when he is bigger

how about 3" wide velcro fixed down the jockey seat, and 3" wide velcro stitched down the inside leg of his trousers. another top tip from Top banana

I made webbing stirrups for my youngest lad a couple of years ago, which he's now grown out of.

They made the ride much better for him, were adjustable, and didn't get in the way for bigger passengers.

They are covered in an old thread somewhere on here.

Don't do stainless footrests, you'll be taking them off again when your boy loses his footing and gashing/bruising himself badly.

The webbing ones seem ideal.

Thanks Guys some good replies and ideas, particularly like the idea of stirrups, they could be fitted from under the seat so no holes would have to be drilled into the side of the seat pod.

Finally went for your idea Ian, pinched one of top banana's old bow seats, carried out a bit of cutting and stapling, and bingo, I now have one happy little chappy.
