I'd say all did the right thing to some extent. Tho maybe not with kids - but a 16 year old lad can be more adult than child. No-one is perfect , but lets be honest can anyone on here actually hear thier radio in a F8? I cant .

It was a F5-6 - gusting 8 - so not like a constant 30+ knot wind .......

I have run 15-20 miles in the solent in a F8 ( not the same as the channel , but a bugger in differant ways )- only me on the boat - only the wife knowing I was out ( somewhere...) & only seeing one other boat out ( Yarmouth lifeboat ! ) .

So I had done the radio check on leaving Cowes etc , but could not hear anything over the wind till I came back into harbour later the same day .

I'd suggest the BBC just needed some 'news' - its not clear how they were ' rescued' - a tow , taken on the lifeboat , shadowed back ....... abit of a non-story I feel.
