Flares for Fun... ::shake::

Maritime and Coastguard Agency Press Office: PARTY GOERS LEAD TO FALSE DISTRESS ALERT

For those who say that setting off old flares is unlikely to cause a false alarm suggest you read this. I'd guess they thought setting 12 off in quick succession would be obvious it wasn't an emergency or that where they were no-one would see it, unless of course you are sat on the shore seeing 12 red parachutes and things "Holy cr*p something big's happened!!"

IF you were going to pop a few old flares (and before I end up being castigated on some safety forum, I'm NOT saying you should) then on a beach, beside an airport might not be the best place to do so...

Yip although I'm pretty sure the flight of the day would have gone. But still...

"After further enquiries and investigation, it was discovered that the flares had been set off by revellers at a beach party at Eolaigearraidh, near Barra Airport."

OMG and not a brain cell between them

Not an airport as we know it though. Put it this way, you can't land at high tide as the runway is the beach.

Barra Airport

Some shots of the "airport" at Barra, and the dog walk to the end of the "runway"...

And just like a RIB, the plane gets a good hosing down when it gets back to base at Glasgow :o)

Hi Kerny - actually we live in Orkney in the Northern Isles and Barra is in the Western Isles... Though we did take the RIB over to Barra this summer and went over the runway, though not a lot of depth!

The Twin Otter you can see is bigger there than our inter-island flights in Orkney on a smaller Islander.. And even littler than that, we have the world's shortest scheduled flight:

My partner is the station manager for the airline here so our trip down to Barra when I took the pics, was to see one of her colleagues.

But yes - it is lovely to live here - even on a rubbish day like today... And you can see some of our seas in the video

Do bring the RIB up sometime :o)

Steve
