Flares are NOT Fireworks

Yes - i have fired a few at RNLI Flare Demos - Dad caught this one ...Ikaros has some kick to them - I been told that the Pains Wessex has less kick.

Ikaros White Para nearly left my Hand when fired - despite holding tight.

This was 2008 as part of Sea Survival Course - RIBnet member will recognise himself in photo!

in 2009 - a orange h/h Smoke exploded in my hand at end of burn, whilst helping out at another, burning my Hoodie and bruising my leg, My hands were hot despite weather gloves - although quick action by the First Aider (ME) prevent burns but going to tap and running water over them till I was ok...Accident Report was submitted, and Hoodie was replaced!

RNLI "Public" flare demos were put on hold after that, i believe they stopped them after that.

ps. I am the one in black !

This seems to be quite a contentious issue, how about an organised RIBNET flare letting off session, we all must have out of date of nearly out of date flares and I'm sure it would be possible to get the correct permissions and expertise's to help run it.

I'm sure I was at something like that ye-e-e-e-ears ago. I'm failry sure there was someone in the bowling / football / whatever club it was door (it was well inland) pretty much pemanently on the phone to (I assume) the CG / Mountain rescue / wherever literally saying "launching red - now...... launching white - now" etc. Memory says you could only fire if you got a wave from the guy with the phone in his hand or something. (it was before mobiles were commonplace!)

I remember it well as it is the only time (and hopefully will continue to be so unless another similar event is organised*) I have set off a rocket flare. I got a white one in a fetching green launch tube.

Re. all the electronics so flares not needed comments - A flare can be seen by everyone - even the landlubber ashore whose idea of VHF is what you listen to Radio 2 on but still sees it - when your elctric bilge pump has failed due to the same flat battery that has just rendered your VHF useless.... type thing.

I do agree we need a better disposal route.

But realistically what are the chances of that with all the Health & Safety these days? "come along & pop your time expired rocket propelled incendiaries"...... I seriously doubt it!
