Fishing off RIB - Chichester Harbour

Not sure if this is the right place for this but here goes.

I know zip about fishing. But want to get a cpl of rods for trying to catch some fish to eat in Chichester Harbour. Not interested in fishing to throw it back in.

What do I need?

Spinning Rod Fixed spool reel 201b Braid and a few Floating Rappalla Plugs..and a few Toby Lures and surface Poppers would be a good start

...Bass Pollock Mackrell ect..
Same gear can be used for light Ledgering too for Bream Flatties ect at a push in the right circumstances.
Mobile Lure Fishing with Light tackle is the way to go IMO during the Summer.
Plenty of good books on the subject...techniques Tackle ect should be showing up in Sea Angler mags anytime now too

Whats a realistic budget for rod / reel / line / lures?

Need one for me and one for my 8yr old boy.

I don't want to spend loads, equally I don't want to buy cheap flimsy tat.

I got a rod and reel from ebay for about £30 it was very good and have used it a lot

Fladden is decent quality gear at the budget end of the market. With sea fishing gear you really do get what you pay for, I've lost count of the cheapo reels I've had over the years & the shed is littered with damaged & broken rods. I now have a couple of Diawa rods & Fin Nor reels & they are bomb proof. If you just want to give it a go & get the boy interested, buy a couple of hand lines & some mackerel feathers for starters. They are cheap, effective, easy to store on the boat & are "close up & personal" when it comes to landing the fish. You can buy a cheap rod/reel outfit for anything from £30 upwards, my Daiwa/Fin Nor combos are around the £240 each mark. A hand line & feathers will cost you a tenner.

Oooh I like the idea of a hand line....tie it off to the A-Frame whilst playing with a rod off side of boat.

Ordered a book off Amazon...arrives tomorrow.

I have a week off with my lad at easter where we'll be windsurfing & fishing in Chichester Harbour.

Well if it takes 5 mins to catch a fish I'll be ecstatic! I am an adrenaline junkie and never been interested in fishing and never tried it....not got the patience. However, things are somewhat forced on you with kids. Regardless, looking forward to having a go at it with him when there is no wind for windsurfing / when he needs to do something calm.

When you hit mackerel there's no shortage of adrenaline/blood/sh1t, plenty for everyone[emoji15]

I prefer a shorter rod on a small boat something around the 6-7' mark. Much easier to handle & store in tight conditions. Also a longer rod can make landing more difficult & unstable imo, my rods are 7'. Too short & you struggle to get the fish clear of the water for landing, we don't use a net, bring em in & in-hook em into a bucket. A rod holder on the A frame is a big help.
Top tip, keep a soft scrubbing brush on the boat & clean off any blood & sh1t immediately, once it dries it's a b******d to get off.

Not quite sure if you'll get too many fix'es of Adrenalin on Mackrel in Chichester Harbour

...but a decent Bass on light tackle is pretty good!
Kids also like float fishing..and IME can give you a little more peace

Apart from the books/mags mentioned ...A quick trip to a reputable tackle shop will soon sort you out with the advice you need and have plenty of levels of gear to suit most Budgets.

A portable Barbi and or smoker is also a good idea for Mackrel too!

Right. Bought a rod & reel. Line & feathers to get from local tackle shop. Read a couple of books on the topic and watched some YouTube videos. Will try and nab some mackerel at the weekend off side of my RIB. How hard can it be?

'Big boys' on Crab Squid and prawn???? Nah mate... Get yourself up to Oban - fish the sound of Jura... Six mackies kebabbed on the hook for bait. An hour or more to land it... Adrenalin, and exhaustion, and elation (and bruises!)... Skate fishing is fan-bloody-tastic. Get my next fix in three weeks time. 80lb braid loaded, size 12/0 hooks sharpened, and 200lb leaders tied.... Can't wait!

I struggle to get excited by fishing, and can't get over folks that fish for pleasure and worse, those that fish to just throw it back in; let alone calling it a sport ! For me, its simply something to do with my son when its not windy, and try and catch some dinner.
