Fishing and beaching

Hi folks

I am looking to purchase a RIB after selling my cruiser/fisher and would welcome advice on the following:

I intend to fish from my boat quite a bit - I have been told that fish hooks will puncture the hypalon tubes, but surely they must be fairly tough and could cope with the odd small hook catching on them (not shark hooks, just normal mustad 2/0 size!). Anyone fish regularly from theirs and if so any problems? Obviously I will be careful not to drag hooks across the tubes, but on occasion when pulling in mackerel on feathers, loose hooks might dig in.

Beaching:
I have been told that it is fine to beach RIB's on sandy beaches, but obviously I am a little concerned that the GRP gelcoat might get gouged or abraded badly. Is this common practice amongst RIBs?

We have fished from ours a few times; no problem. Obviously, keep an eye on the hooks when reeeling in.

If 'Ribfisher' can manage this lot, I am sure you will be fine.

Yes, you have to be a little carefull when fishing. Keep a couple of old bathroom mats in the boat, soak in seawater and drape over the tubes at fishing postion. When done, wring out, fold and keep for next time.
Regarding beaching: only one answer to that is fit a Keelguard.

we have a menai 5.5 metre rib,we use for fishing,we fish on average 3 days per week,at anchor or drift i have never felt more safe, we havent had any probs with hooks as long as you are carefull,its nice sit with your feet up and fish,we are very pleased with ours,we fish four on ours very easy

It's actually surprisingly hard to get a hook into a tube that's inflated-the angles are all wrong. I've never had a problem with hooking tubes. I've hooked the safety lines a few times but that's not really a problem.

Make sure you dont smash your engine into your fishing rods when triming it up like the original owner did who is a mate of mine. I told him not to fit the rod holders on the back of the bench seat

..... By the way your boat name "bradosh" is a mixture of the original owners sons names..... Bradley and Josh...

Good idea Linda about the mats, I'll bear that in mind if it does become a problem.
Keelguard was on my mind, so I may well put one on when we choose a boat.

Hi Genie

I fish from my 6m cabin redbay all the time (I am vice-chairman of Blackpool Boat Angling Club) .A rib is a great platform to fish from, very stable at anchor

When I ordered the boat I specified extra cladding round the tubes and this
has worked a treat.

We beach launch using tractors

Thanks for that Mike - if it's good enough for you chaps to fish from, it'll be more than up to the job for our little excursions (usually only 2-3nm offshore).
Good point on the cladding - if I can't make that work, there's always LimeyLinda's practical suggestion.
I think the general consensus is 'don't worry about it', so I wont!

If you get a fishfinder and see a fish on it, can you take a picture of the screen. I maintain no one has ever seen a real fish on a fishfinder and if a fishy icon pops up on the screen, its only a dummy fish icon programmed in by the manufactures.

I found that I was scratching up my tubes from the dorsal fins of some larger fish like pike. A good net solfed the problem.

In my opinion I would be looking for a RIB that has the tubes touching the water at all times, this will give you the stability advantage of a RIB, they will also have less freeboard allowing you easier access to your fish!
