1 use a uptider for tope, 6lb class braid rod with small multiplier for general, 10foot spinning rod for bass, and will be trying a fly rod this year. have mounted a rod rack on a frame, also carry a 40foot sandeel net, and a 30 gallon livebait well. my rib looks like a pin cushion floating on the menia straits..if i had to pick one rod it would be a 9,6, uptide rod, abu 7000 type reel full of 30lb braid..........

if the menia bass bandits are giving a go this year, let me know, and i will net some bait and show you a few marks, you need a tidal range of 28 to 30 foot, early low water for netting, fishing 3 or 4 marks starting at caernarfon on the flood and finishing near puffin on high water..

A great reel.

Bait is key too. I've used rag worm, fresh peeler crab, squid, etc. Carry hooks, weights, line rigs in a multi-compartment tool box. Fishing bags are a waste of time at sea.

Might be a little expensive for what you're looking at but I've got a terrific Shimano exage ax stc 20-30lb travel rod that is brilliant. A real high quality rod that breaks down to a small size and goes in to a little tube holder.

Mine is years old and is as good today as the day I bought it. Had Mackerel, Bass, Cod, Conger and Rays on it and is equally happy to give enough sport for playing bream to the surface.

Looks like they've updated the upper grip than that of mine, it's all gone spirally

I've got a Shahespere cheapo thing, cost me 11 brand new from the local tachle shop and it does the job fine, its 20lb class.
Reel wise I have an old Shakespere charter special reel and a Scarbrough reel.

We used to go on my mates keel boat and use rods with two eyes one of which wasn't the tip one and use Scarbrough reels with a wood screw and end of a broom handle as your handle, still caught stuff!

20-30lb rods are well to heavy for rib fishing, we only use 8-12lb max 7ft rods armed with shads, eels etc when fishing around the gower for bass caught 10lb bass, 5-10lb cod and 5-8lb rays using light rods. secret of using light rods is using 20-30lb braid line as light line will give before rod will, you can play a big fish using thicker line and light rod
we use mitchell premium 7ft boat rods 15 amazon and ocuma baitcaster reels around 30 so not expensive stuff
