First RIB? [was Avon Adventure 560+ 100hp+ Wanted (or similar) £10k]

I'm looking for an Avon Adventure 560 with a four stroke outboard, ideally a Yamaha 100hp - 115hp. Ideally looking for navy blue tubes, white hull with rear bench seat plus double jockey seats, bow seat and cushion, double console, stainless steel A frame (with nav lights) and a roller trailer.

Will consider similar if in good condition but not after anything smaller.

The JBT one is *exactly* what I'm after.... but it's already "under offer". I've emailed anyway. Thanks for the link though.

As for widening the criteria, done lots of looking and reading this forum, and even though the Avon Adventure gets a bit of a bad rep by some of the more experienced on here, it sounds pretty good for a first rib. Definately big enough for the family and sounds like it'll be suited to The Solent.

I guess I could be tempted by an alternative though...

there was one on ebay last week-maybe worth a look if it is still there.

i had same dilemma over my first rib and the "ribbing" (get it!) the adventure took on here by some. i love mine and i think you'll like it to based on the brief description you've given what it is for.

i understand why people maybe don't like them completely but they really need a reality check-these people are hurting potential fellow ribbers which is surely why we are all here?. all you get is snide remarks and it's getting tired. i have news for ye lads-not everyone (me included) wants an sr as they look like horse manure, even if they get you home in 10ft seas-i don't want one. there is room in this rib hobby for us all-so knock it off with the snide adventure remarks because mark my words-your putting people off ribs. i've had quite a few PM's from people wanting an adventure that you have put off-i know EXACTLY how they feel as i was there myself-but i'm a little thicker skinned. there is a point where you go from good advice to compulsive.

No-one's even mentioned a Searider. Where did you get that one from? There's no point in comparing them as they are different beasts.Yes, they are tougher boats but no, they don't suit everyone and they aren't much cop as a family boat because they are too narrow to put multiple jockeys in.

Essentially, the upshot of it is there's far better boats out there for the same money as an Adventure,with the same layout,better seakeeping and durability.
It's comparable to being offered a new Rav4 and a new Range Rover sport for the same money and going for the Rav4.

Incidentally, I met a couple of people with Adventures a few months back who swore blind they did 55 knots with a Yam F100 and 6 people aboard

They were running for a week with the tubes almost flat...

Hi Nos4r2, So what are they? (the better ribs for the money). I could do with the advice. Basically I'm after 5.5m or bigger that I can get 8 people in. Want it to look good. Want it to be good for 40knts +. I'm going to be based in chichester harbour but want to be able to get across to the Isle of Wight and cruise in the Solent. It'll only get used in Summer months. And my budget for something second hand is £10k, possibly with a small amount of room to stretch. Any help much appreciated!

I didn't realise quite how controversial Avon Adventures were. Almost as controversial as Leeway Ribs (which I admit I like the look of but understand the ethical dilemma!).

Xk59D, thanks for the pointer to ebay, I'll get searching. There is one in the for sale section here but not the right configuration, no idea how easy or costly they are to change!

You'd have to change the console to get 8 onboard, but it's a much better boat.

8 onboard a 560 adventure is seriously pushing it anyway. I'd be looking at a bigger boat as a starting point.

I'd agree that for £10k you could get something 5.5-6m better than the avon adventure. Though over 6m etc it will be getting longer in the tooth.

But to fit 8 people comfortably, you may need it! Would the avon adventure have really fitted 8 in comfort?? I doubt it.

I suppose we had 8 in our 5.4SR once, but you certainly wouldn't have cruised across the solent like that!!

Thanks for all the advice. It would only be 8 people for a gentle cruise to the beach, more likely 4-6 for actually winding it up and heading out of the harbour.

The Viper looks interesting. A lot of boat and engine for the money but possibly a bit on the old side and very... yellow!

Any more suggestions gratefully received!

careful, plenty of the yellow fraternity cruising this forum!

But yes, I take your point, almost yellow overkill!

Nothing wrong with a 560D. The tubes are higher than most ribs out there, Solents, Seariders, etc, etc.. Its a very dry ride for bimbling about on the Solent.. If you wanted to go 8 up, for short journeys, a 100hp will do the job.. I managed 35knots, 4 up, with a 70hp.. Its a very underated rib, mainly by people who have never been in one.. For cruising the Solent, its ideal..

as i said there is a MARKED difference between discussion and the sniping some are doing. (renault comment for example helps NO ONE)

fwiw i had 4 proper size adults out at weekend with mine and it was hitting 42mph flat out, it will hit 50 on a light chop and 1 person only but you can forget about 40 knots with 8 people. the boat would take 8 if you had to but i would think you could forget about getting it out the hole with a 4 stroke motor or you will need to change props to do so if your going to carry a lot of people all the time. if i was going to have 8 people i'd be looking at a much bigger boat to be comfortable. if it's only once in a blue moon the 5.6 should be ok but you will be leaving little room for anything with that many depending on the boat layout.

if you want to carry 6 people pretty regular and all adults then i'd think you want atleast a 6.5m boat and 150hp upwards. good luck with your search

So, this thread is probably getting a bit long for this section, but does anyone have an opinion on Ribeyes. There's an interesting looking 6.5 with a Yamaha 115hp on it for sale on this forum. It looks worth considering, six jockey seats so presumably good for six up at speed.

Jesus, some pretty emotive comments occur with adventure and ribeyes! All got a little overheated. All boats have a place in someone's heart!

End if the day if new prices arent right for their target market the firm goes under. Second hand prices reflect demand. So lower quality ribs will fall to a value price for someone at some point. Just like the MGFs of the last 10 years, they pretty much went bust but then seconds depreciated to a point below other convertibles which then made them a good buy for some peoples circumstance.
