First attempts with my GoPro

i shot this on Saturday, still trying to get used to the software side of things. I have got the camera mounted on my mast amidships. It is about 6 feet above the floor, which gives quite a good vantage point, but flattens the size of the waves. Good thing is that I have a 360 degree scope from this position. It was shot using 960 -30 @ 170 degree wide angle

The actual footage is far crisper than You Tubes display.

Lovely bit of film... I wonder why YouTube isn't letting you upload it at higher quality? Saw you did what I do, when you stuff the bow you duck your head down slightly and the water goes down your neck

I personally don't really like the height it feels too detached, it would be good for the odd shot to be blended in but down lower is where the action is, even on your consul would be a huge improvement. The only downside with lower is more water on the lens, but then you are getting drops attaching up there as well, get some rain-x it may help.

Enjoyed the vid, your knees and backside must have been sore as you took one or two good ones!! Interested to know what the weather stats were for that day, were you singlehanded?

Thanks for your comments. I may well have cocked up the settings on YouTube, there was a choice.
The full film is to be used as part of a training package we are doing for HISC Safety Boat drivers and having the camera higher, looking down, shows the different directions that waves are coming from. i have some other footage that I haven't edited yet, shot from Hayling Rescues RIB. We had the camera on the consol screen for those shots. I will stick that up next for comparison.
One of the problems having the camera lower is that in the steep waves we get on the bar, all you will see is sky then sea without seeing what the waves are actually doing. It is more dramatic, but that is not what I am trying to achieve.

Ducking when the waves crash over the bow is a bad habit I need to break, Spent the rest of the day feeling very soggy!

The trick will be clever editing to get the best of both, as you stated in your original post you believed the wave height was lost at that height, I agree. It will be a matter of try and see, maybe attach it to a helmet, that way it is in between both heights, or at least for a bit of film to edit in, that way its not just a boring long film of sea, you need to make it interesting, watch closely at any film to do with the sea and boats and watch what angles they use, then try them out yourself.

I was crossing the bar between 11.15 and 11.45 ish.

I was singlehanded and unescorted. However, we have the brilliant Hayling Rescue to call on if it all goes "Tits Up", plus of course the RNLI station is right by the Bar.

The next mod to the RIB will be some letter box style scuppers on the transom to let large amounts of water through when it gets swamped. The existing bailer and bilge pump doesn't shift it quick enough and the handling gets rather iffy when there is a 100 gallons or so of water sloshing around inside!

I agree, mixing it up will make it more interesting, but I found simply getting this clip together took all evening! Once I have got more skills in the software department, I will do as you are suggesting

I am probably going to mount another GoPro facing backwards on the mast and then attempt a split screen.
May be a while coming at my present learning curve speed...

There is some good and reasonably priced video editing software out there whether for iMac or PC, once you get the hang of it you will sought after to help others out

I was a film producer not an editor, but certainly knew what I wanted and got it, with your tenacity you will get there, you could try something like Roxio Creator 2012 Pro, it has loads of useful software in one If you shop around at certain times there are deals, today is independence day in the USA so there will be holiday deals if you buy online from there

No get yourself a good set of elephant trunks they'll shift the water for you as long as you keep the rib going I have thanked them many a time as have many on here

I have an elephant trunk for the first time on my new Searider, without mucking up this fine thread can you briefly tell me what to do with it, is it just a matter of letting it down at speed so it sucks the water out, then lift it up?

If you're swamped, lower the trunks and with the boat going forward the water will be thrown to the back and out the trunks.

There's a point of view that says run with them down, just in case like.

On my RC it all flows out if you give it some. The floor is sufficiently above the water line that nothing flows back. Your SR4, Mr. SR4, may behave differently, but I doubt it. I'm sure others will advise if necessary...

By the way, if you DO get swamped, make sure the sat phone, microwave, bbq, wallet, et al are safe

You'll soon realise if you've left it down when you slow down... The quickest way is to give it some beans and trim up slighty it rushes out of ours in under 3 minutes...

All depends how far advanced you want to take the footage. I use windows live video editing and best of all its free. (i have windows 7). I feel sometimes the more advanced / purchased editing software you get the much more complicated it becomes. Here is a recent attempt of mine

there should be an option on your editing software of what to save it as, ie 480, 960, 1080 etc, etc. Of course 1080 takes a long long time to load to you tube and a long time to download to watch. Some of my 5 min videos have taken over an hour on wifi connection.
