Fermanagh Lakelands.

Not set in stone yet but we are seriously looking at taking the rib here for our summer holiday.

We are looking at camping but might look at chalets, has anyone on here spent time on the Lakelands and any recommendations thanks ?

Yes. I have a brother who rents a house on the shore of the upper lough. Private access to a modern pontoon jetty. public slip only half a mile away. No fees.
It's called badger lodge and it's tourist board passed. Will paste a link shortly but Google it.
Very nice spot and a good base to explore lough north or south. IMO upper lough is best.

Is there a speed limit on the lakes? Is it possible to get to the sea from the lakes, via lock, canal etc? Any restrictions on boats/engines/HP/CEVNI? Is it like the inland waterways in England, do you need permits etc? Better find out before you book Steve

Hi
Quick answer.
Speed limits apply to usual places in around marinas and some narrow/river sections to stop erosion of banks. But generally you are good to fly in the open expansive areas.
You can access sea by going south using Erne/Shannon waterway system of locks. But I think it's not really an option if you base yourself on lough erne and want to explore the area. Better off towing boat to coast for a day or two.
Boats over 10hp need to be registered but it's free. Not sure if it's required for tourists but check on "waterways Ireland" website. The waterway system is expansive stretching from Belleek in North to limerick in South.

Forgot to say. Access to fuel can be a problem if you are petrol, no pumps on shoreline. Diesel pumps ok. If you are based somewhere then you can trailer boat to petrol station.

Your nearest access to open sea is at Ballyshannon by car. Lough erne flows to North and exits at Ballyshannon but no you can't go by boat.

Camping in or close to lough is available. Try Share Centre I think they can arrange an overnight on an island. I done it before. There was a link on badger site.

This looks a really interesting place for boating I have had plenty emails with advice and links from T 15 (thanks mate) so I am now looking into ferry prices and times from Liverpool for July/August. This could well be a good contender for the Kerny summer holidays and Pottsy and willk thanks for your input on this thread.
