Clearly this is a bait thread? Why would anyone think "a rib is a boat with an inflatable fender around it" sheer madness!

PITA for me as well They made a right mess of the right grey rubbing strake during the Alderney trip on the second night when we didnt bother with the fenders! It doesn't really need fenders though does it, ar'nt they supposed to be bullet proof with the extra rubber around the outside?

If anyone is the owner of a large "early" cobra rib, who tied up against an unmarked Scorpion in Cowes at powerboat week, maybe they would like to pay for my rubbing strake to be replaced. The sound of his rubbing strake pinging against mine in the swell could be heard in the fountain. Unfortunately I was using all four of my fenders to keep the boat from being ripped open like a tin of beans against the jetty!

Anyone who says any boat doesnt need fenders obviously has no respect for their own property and more importantly other peoples, which in my mind is selfish. I kind gent in a beautiful little Avon offered me one of his fenders, while shaking his head in disbelief!

Was that in the Town Quay, around lunchtime on Friday, just after the Cowes 100 race?

Easy solution - as farmers say when marking lambs, a sharp knife and a clear conscience!

"No mate, I never saw your rib tied up here. Some bugger must have nicked it while I was away. Can't trust anybody round here can you?"

That's a very fair point. I suppose my op was because as yet in my neck of the woods I've never had to raft up. We're on a mooring and when at the jetty or any of the harbors I have entered, I am tying up alone. If I realized our boat would be rubbing against others and causing any damage I would of course take precautions. I feel for you, though you should have either collared him or let him loose!

Tonyt, looks like it is cricket at Xmas! else I'll be vilified in April!

Not really, hence the "?" in the OP. Grasp the language.

Good to find peoples views, as can be seen, some don't as there is no need in their boating environment.

We supply Compass Marine fenders - they're flat as a rib only needs protection from rough surfaces - and they don't take up as much room as normal ones!

friday of cowes torquay race, in cowes behind redjet, probably about lunchtime, it was after the race boats started coming in. It was particularly bumpy there. I admit later I rafted along side a raceboat in the marina without fenders, as it was entirely sheltered and no movement of boats, short term!

When I had a hardboat, I never deployed fenders until i had moored, as usually I was driving single handed and the effort of sorting all the ropes, fenders etc, was easier to do once, I had my midship holding me in.
