In this specific instance, with an etec, the issue would not have arisen.

Could you not fit an axillary bracket or is there not enough room for that either ?
Possibly room for the bracket, though it would be very tight and aux would have to be installed inboard until needed. Fitting it whilst afloat could be pretty awkward too given the styling of the boat.

Had something similar a few years back when my outboard overheated and went into a pathetic limp home mode. It was just past sunset and we were on our way back from France about to enter the tricky passages around the Ecrehoes with fairly strong tide. Could only manage a couple of knots headway so decided the safest thing to do was call for assistance sooner rather than later. No shame at all.

Some of our younger more flippant contibutors may not remember teletext, but it was made public on the local news page.

Yep, or get a rag and stick to use in emergencies - not that there was any breeze out there yesterday (except when the RedJet went by!).

I concur, and check 'em after service time. Every time!

If the cables are wrapped in insulation over the cable/connector joint, peel a bit back and check them. If they are crimped connections, I'd say check them very well - I had a day out ruined by a poor crimped connection that worked loose/r

Only thing that was a possible alternative was calling VTS on 12 and explaining to them - they could have advised commercial traffic of your position. Then make the call to CG to advise of situation. Would buy you some time to assess if you could fix it (they would probably sent LB anyway).

Note this is typed from a comfy sofa in the dry, light and warm room

And the beauty of calling VTS after the pan pan is that VTS would of called SP ( southampton patrol, harbour master's launch) who would probably have been out on patrol near you . SP would have towed you out of the shipping lanes and (if possible) stayed with you until help arrived. If SP for some reason was unavailable and you were causing a real concern for shipping then we would have beed dispatched to pull you out of the way. ( the blue tugs at the end of the Esso jetty)..... If your lucky the boys would have given you a cup of tea too :-)

Thanks SDG/Simon. Must admit I didn't consider calling VTS.

Call to the coastguard was the right thing to do.

Whether it was a Pan Pan or just a call to advise of the situation they do appreciate being called early.

A tad harsh, go easy on the lad he's only a bairn. He does have a point though, once the Etec is started, it's independent of the battery. You can remove the battery & it'll keep going, it will probably blow the charging circuit in the EMM though.

Ha ha had exactly the same problem a few years back , new boat with an etec . Ok the motor didn't stop , but the ignition lights etc all came on so i switched off the engine to check for a problem , then it wouldn't start again .

I guess the etec did allow me to carry on and switch off when it suited me .

i didn't really know to start and you get a little worried very quickly , drifting on a windy day isn't the place to find out how badly the dealer has installed the electrics on a new boat .

What, an EMM failure on an etec? Surely not?

It was 'Clyde of Dartmouth' as their other boat is 'Bonnie of Dartmouth'! Talking to the Skipper last night who said he was more than happy to help and glad that you have got it sorted. Can happen to anyone and just hope someone does the same for me if ever.........

Hi Andrew, I obviously misheard the name, but appreciate you passing on my thanks. Suffice to say, if I ever have the opportunity to return the favour to another boat user, I won't hesitate to do so.

My concern is that if this happens to me, my VHF would be as useless as everything else that relies on the battery.

I do have the Solent CC telephone number in my mobile.

For what its worth I think you did exactly the right thing, and I learn a lot from reading these experiences that get shared.

Well done and thanks for sharing.
