As the OP said in thread 17

Impressed that my Pan Pan was picked up in Ventnor, considering I was using a Cobra handheld and sending only on low power (decided it was unnecessary to switch to high given my position).

Always carry a back up handheld VHF - preferably attached to your LJ

No problem running at E-tec with the battery disconnected in principal. A loose battery connection will blow the EMM however.

Aye it's the surging that fries the EMM as the connection arcs. Personally I think it's a major design flaw putting the rectifier in the EMM, a 10 bob component blowing, renders a 1100 module u/s.
