I must be getting old but here's my logic. Top speed is usually limited to a given sea condition verses a given boat length/design/power. There aren't many days that we get mirror calm waters in order to exploit top speed, the trouble with setting your boat for high speed running usually means compromising your normal running set-up.

Very true,I'm fortunate enough to run two boats. 8.6 m for cruising and rougher stuff and 5m for shits and giggles.

Well I think the thing to do is to experiment and do something others haven't. I often thought what a RIB would go like with a small block V8 running a cleaver prop

Think he was meaning any nicely running 90, probably a 2 stroke because of weight. In this case it was a mid 90's Evinrude Ocean Pro.
The Ribtec is a nice hull, deep V but quite narrow.
