Exmouth - Where to Launch

Hi Guys,
New to the forum and in desperate need of a little guidance on where to launch and recovery my boat if anyone can help?
I have an 18ft bow rider. Ok, so it’s not a rib but it’s a boat and we’re all friends, right?!? Lol. Anyway, a few years ago I had it moored on the River Exe in Topsham and when needed would launch and recover from a slipway in Exmouth. Possibly Mamhead but I couldn’t say for certain. The boat has been out of the water for some time and I’m keen to return this year but won’t be leaving it in the water this time and this is where I need some help!
I believe the Mamhead slip was shut in 2012, has it reopened yet? If not, could anyone recommend an alternative? I’d ideally like a concrete slip and most profess to be the best at launching and recovering. I travel from Bristol so something as close to Exmouth is preferable.
Hopefully I haven’t made my criteria too specific so as to rule everything out!!

Poly steps is a good choice, but you launch in to the channel and its a lot easier with 2 people. For a change of scenery try Torquay harbour as there is some great coastline on the way around to Teignmouth and Exmouth.

Torquay can be launched at all tide, double width and pontoon nearby, trailer parking on the harbourside, and pay and display car park close by. So its easy to launch on your own, but also family friendly.

Can get a bitty busy when sailing events are on.

PS I'm pretty sure you can get it in at Topsham, and there is definitely one place that does a crane launch, just google for it.

Think I'm going to start at polly steps as it's a little closer but also fancy trying Torquay at some point too.

There is a crane facility in Topsham but quite expensive from what I remember and I do want/need to improve my trailering skills, lol!!!

I recently used the slipway at the old Tremlett Yard near Topsham. There is a small charge but it is easy to use, quiet, and has unrestricted parking. A photograph can be found on my Revenger 23 thread. Contact:

Is that slip on the River Clyst or Exe?

The slip is in the Clyst. You get about an hour either side of high tide and should probably look at the channel at low tide before launching. I didn't, so was stirring up mud in places.

I've scoped this place...and wouldn't recommend it!

Very tight Very Muddy and very Tidal!!......Go on to Polly Steps....even with a decent tidal run on springs its a lot easier.

IMO Complete Madness when you consider how much Trade all the Boaters /Fishermen and thier Familys used to bring to the Town in times gone by...

Whilst I appreciate the recommendation I don't think the Clyst slip is for me. I did sound promising initially as it would reduce my travelling distant but will go with Polly Steps.

Can you launch from Polly Steps at low tide?

I think it depends on "how low"? I seem to recall that on a spring the end of the slip will be out of the water at low tide. It was only about a 9 inch drop onto stones so potentially you could reverse the trailer off the end. I have not used Polly Steps since the council tried to charge me £19 for parking.

No, there are definite plans to rebuild it, at a better angle to the sea wall to reduce the cross-tide flow across the end. Meant to be starting this summer (but then we are talking East Devon District Council). Their latest, greatest £18m (yes million) splash zone further along the front is no doubt a far more exciting prospect for them - lots more developer cash floating around

Rec slip is OK an hour or so either side of HW (might want it to be spring-ish)

Certainly Hope so...but how long have we been hearing this BS For now?? Councils and Councillors have all kinds of "Plans"..definite and otherwise, usually a plethora around election time!
It's action that cuts the Mustard!...like I said..just how many years is it now
