FWIW - an old but true saying. "As you train, so shall you respond.." So, don't use mobie for conversation and keep VHF for when there is a HVAC/Merde collision - get familiar with the VHF for appropriate and routine comms so you can use it when you have to.
Other ways of getting v. familiar is to become involved in a cruise/rescue rib work/mark laying etc. where you can use the vhf lots usually on private channels!
Alternatively - listen to the SAR helos working 16/67/0 (if you can) - these guys are hot! Be aware they will be using modified procedures - much more clipped and precise. Also available are some downloads on audio.sarwatch.co.uk
which are from 5680Mhz but you'll get the gist...
And definitely stick MIRPDANIO somewhere near the radio/laminated card!
