"They said they planned to return to Lymington, from Cowes, but missed the entrance to Lymington Harbour and ran out of fuel just off Fort Victoria".

Over here in California I was recently surprised to learn that it's not illegal to drink and operate a boat. It's only illegal is you get over the blood/alcohol limit to be "legally drunk" .08.

True, and being over that limit will get you a moving drunk driving violation on your drivers license. Currently, that means no drivers license for a year, and approximately $10,000 (or more) in court costs and fees.

But, yes; you can be legally operating a boat with a beer in your hand.

It also said they had no lifejackets, no radio and no warm clothing, were half-cut and had little fuel - so a really well planned trip then !

Even leaving Hamble two years ago a RIB had run out of fuel exiting the river on route to the fireworks in daylight despite having passed the fuel pontoon!

I've heard firsthand accounts from lifeboat crew who have been hauled out of bed in the wee hours to attend drunks on boats. It some cases, the boaters have been too drunk to stand or see properly. They were just aimlessly tooling around in the dark and the call to "assist" them was made by concerned parties ashore.

A lick of the fire hose would do them good.

But isn't that the whole point of running out of fuel, that you don't realise it's going to happen?

I suspect if this person knew his fuel was low he'd have stopped at the fuel berth, or are people over your way really that thick?

I think you're trying to read too much into this. Thick drunken twats are thick drunken twats. Don't matter what form of transport you put them in

Every walk of life has them, doesn't matter where in the world you don't have to dig deep to find them !!!
It's a pity it's drawing so much attention !

Which way would that be?

How about all the "people over your way" who drove home from the pub pissed out their minds last night?

These lads were foolish, but they weren't gonna a wipe out a young family on their way home.
