Hi folks

Glad your all OK Charles, its somthing we all hope we never have to go through.
Also souns like your RIB is not going to be to much work to get back in shape.

I understand your thoughts on not putting to much on RIB Net till all the facts etc are clear and sorted out between all parites, however as you see in so many boat mags a "looking back" what would you have done different may give us some insight and help us all in we are ever in your place.

Hope everything gets sorted and your ribbing again soon

Glad to hear that all are well and getting back to the other important thing in life aside from RIBing WINE. As for the DSC side of things Jools and myself had a chat with the Coastgard at the boat show and they agreed that with a DSC the larger ships would have had the accurate position to pass on. I will have a word with Jools and see if we can sit down and put some words down on DSC usage as during the season we have met up with other RIBs that have DSC fitted and the responce has been quite vairied from yes lets give it a try, then finding that they did not have the MMSI programed in to having no idea how to use the DSC side of the radio. Will be very interested to here what the cause of the "parting" was as this could be of concern to us all.

An interesting question was asked of me by the Alderney Harbourmaster.

Where is your radar reflector?

Well, I did not not have one as I am possibly fitting a radar and thought it not necessary. He informed me that since 01 June 2002 it was compulsory to have one fitted and you would be breaking the law if you had not done so.

Did anyone else know this, I was completely ignorant, tut,tut

Ahah... Solas 5!!!

MCA had some leaflets on their stand (they'd been criticised for the lack of publicity and promised to have them published in time for the Southampton show)

Didn't the Harbourmaster ask where your table of life saving signals is as well???

I cannot believe it is almost a month ago since this all happened. Anyway, I have been extremely frustrated to say the least. The insurance company appointed an assessor from their panel who is based here in Jersey. It took him 4 days to get to Alderney and then came back and met with me a week later. He requested a couple of photographs from me of the torn hypalon etc. This was a rather strange request because, would you not think having been to look and asess the Rib he would have taken his own photographs?! In the meanwhile I gathered 3 quotes/estimates and promptly forwarded these to the insurance company as requested. A week later the assessor was to have submitted his report, only to find out that he 'swanned' off on a short holiday to France. My hands were tied, the broker's hands were tied and there was nothing the insurance company could do without this chap's report. When he finally did manage to send me a copy of his preamble to the report, he spoke of PVC, triple gluing overlocking, my goodness the chap did not have a clue what he was talking about as far as ribs are concerned. It always frightens me when non-rib people start spouting off about ribs, and as we all know, ribs are not your average GRP type boats. A lot of specialist knowledge is required.

To end this post, the quote from Scorpion has been accepted and my boat will be placed on a ship in Alderney, taken to Weymouth and then on to Lymington - probably be back in time for Christmas

A hard 'bow nose' will be manufactured, new tapered tubes (from Nick Gilbertson- have you started yet, Nick?) supplied and fitted with the valves on the outside! A couple of other mods will be done at the same time.

I trust I will then have a FANTASTIC Rib....I ordered the Raymarine RL70C Plus plotter as well as the Tri-data Raymarine auto-helm....hmmm need to order that fridge for the large locker.

The Raymarine RL70C is a fantastic piece of kit. the high speed plotter is the dogs dangly bits and you will never have to buy a paper chart again. Next thing you know you will be sitting back, enjoying yourself, on auto pilot thinking about going around the world! If you do, I have all the C-Maps for your new toy

I found the tests done in MBM back in July 2001...

Best was the Pains-Wessex Ocean Sentry (as used by RNLI I think) but at a price - £850

- but 100% effective
Second the Cyclops 3 - £379
Third the Firdel Blipper at £129
Then sort of equal fourth the Cyclops 2 at £299 and the 18" Octahedral at £13.35
The tube-prism type were pretty useless in their tests, and they didn't test the tin can. Pity, 'cos a tin can would have been a good "control" test...

Child's play, all these octahedral type useless devices. The Raymarine plotter is hardware and software ready, so the next purchase will be the radome.
