Nonsense - the hull was perfectly capable of a smooth landing! Now the Isle of Man trip a few years back... but even then with someone who knew what they were doing at the helm it was remarkably smooth ...although there are a couple of guys who have never stepped onto a boat since!

I would agree.
I've had them for a few seasons now,and while every thing has its limits,QUALITY (and the clue is in the name)"Shock mitigation" seats or systems are a real Bonus and IMO a Boon!...to BOTH comfort and safety.
For me they do enhance the Boating experience,especially if you enjoy rough weather Ribbing,and or indulge in long passages.
Can you get away without them? Of course you can..we've all managed for years.
But...things move on and improvements are made....look how far car suspension technology has improved over the years....with most vehicle users having a pretty soft ride before! Compared to Ribbers!
Hopefully prices will come down in the future as more manufacturers get involved,but this kit does take some serious Cosh!...and needs top quality design and materials!...As in all things.. Leading to high costs.
It does worry me that people in thier attempt to produce homemade,cheaper versions may do themselves or thier family/friends very serious injuries when it doesn't work out how they'd hoped!

I agree Maximus, any DIY solution needs to be properly engineered. I've done some maths and my current issue is that I can't get sufficient travel into the device, if it sits on top of my existing jockey seat pod... unless I grow about a foot....

Any more updates or ideas. I am getting dangerously close to having to make something or buy them. Curious to know how the ulman like units work without a hinge?

Funny this thread should come up.

I was driving my tractor today (which has a very comfortable pneumatic seat) and it got me thinking how hard or easy it would be to adapt it for a RIB.

Silly I know but I have a lot of time to think when doing a 14 mile round trip to feed silage to the stags.

I have friends who are engineers, welders, and water jet operators. The engineers aren't much help other than to say the seat bases aren't rocket science. Any reason we can't make up some real plans? An open source suspension seat? Probably insurance reasons but if you aren't selling them we should make a set of real DIY plans. One of the simpler crisscross style.

Are the shocks only in a perfectly vertical plane on a rib?

Scotseats, have supplied truck style suspension seats (Kab) for cabin ribs for years. I assume they don't like getting sea water on them though (as never seen on an open Rib). Presumably a reason why they have a different, rather than just water resistant design for open boats.

Anyone heard how Paul Lemar is faring?..,
I heard he had incurred a Bad Back injury quite recently whilst useing a recognised purpose made shock mitigation seat??

I do believe that Paul sustained a spinal injury whilst out testing a RIB driven by HMS. The boat was fitted with proprietary UK made suspension seats.

Just heard the basics on the Grapevine..
Sorry to hear of any Bad injury,and hopfully he's on the mend!
