and the opinion of the coroner and judge if someone hits a surfacing diver eh. A black head on a dark sea is not the easiest thing to see!

I remember it being of the "keep well clear" type of instruction as well. Basically show some common sense, 50-100m is not a lot of distance in some cases.

ok ,,half a mile then ,,,lol,,, problem with the col regs dont forget is that they cover just about any size vessel , small leisure craft sail or power to large ships ,its all down to common sense ,small dinghy may pass fine where as a trawler towing a large net may cause a bit of concern ,

So we can say no distance has been set.

I personally had a hood with a bright yellow stripe down the middle and yellow fins.

Not sure how it would stand up in court if a dive boat had a A flag and a diver was struck by another boat. What happens if the said dive boat left harbour with the A flag flying.....

if t'flags up and the diver is down then the correct signal is shown and the correct response is expected one would think. If the flag was flying when leaving harbour then perhaps those are mitigating cicumstances, but with a stopped boat i doubt the excuse ""i didnt think he really meant it" is gonna hold water. And as we were keeping "a good look out by all means available" then we would have seen it -p'raps.
When we were working in IJmuiden it was a regular thing to see a dutchman frantically waving an "A" flag from the side of a docked vessel that was having underwater welding work being carried out. Mind you the noise from our big twin diesels with above water exhausts was enough to worry anyone

i have seen very large diamond shaped advanced warning boards put up warning of divers working under moored up ships or diving on shoreworks in confined rivers ports ect

what has pissed me in the past is when you are pulling a fleet of pots that have been there all night all bouyed and flagged and and some orange rib stops about 50 yards in front of you and the D.O starts shouting in a posh voice and waving that they are diving a wreck and to keep clear, like its some sort of piss take .or when they pull up and start diving when there is a group of angling boats perhaps fishing a wreck expecting everyone to pack up and go elsewhere,

Off topic but in relation to Mart's post.

I can spend a bit of time setting setting the Aquabell up for a good drift across a wreck so we hit it nicely and some tosser turns up with no GPS and stops 40ft away from you because he doesn't have the knowledge or equipment to do this themselves.

Not to put too fine a point on it but there are tossers everywhere in every pastime and job.
I hit two bouy ropes in Orkney last year that were not hanked up and were left drifting more than 50yds from the actual bouy plus even had a fisherman who deliberately was casting for the bubbles.
Never had a problem with fishermen on wrecks but I can imagine there are some diver idiots who will have, unfortunately they do get everywhere.
Even as a diver I would have to admit that a considerable number of divers do not know how to properly operate a RIB or have any consideration.

ps I could not be called posh by any stretch of the imagination

50yds, thats fair game for been cut in my book.

If enders aren't marked and visible at night either by reflective tape of lights then there also fair game. Our boat hit a fellow crew members on a shout at 30kts, he asked how his ended faired "match sticks" was the reply.
If I left something in the water and wanted it to be there the next day I would mark it well. I took a load of Hi-vis vests out of the skip for the same lad, lazy sod never put them on his enders though!

Apparently talking to various boat owners in the area none of the potters hank their ropes in the Orkney North isles.
I hit two over a week despite giving them wide berths, both times caught the floating rope around the skeg and came to a fairly sudden stop from full chat.
The first was a surprise, the second I gave an even wider berth and still caught it. After this I gave all pots at least 100yd wide sea room. The b**gers were even using floating rope to boot.
Apart from this it is a great area to cruise and I hope to go back up this year again, we were assumed to be locals simply because they never see anybody bar locals in boats in the area......
In saying that I nearly hit one at full speed a few weeks ago going from Oban to Lochaline at night, on the direct line between Lismore light and Oban. Just missed it and no more as all it was marked with was a black flag, at night, midway across the firth on the ferry route!

eeer phil ,,does the enders bit and mark it well , also refer to a certain boat house roof ,that someone clobbered when putting the boat away with the docking arms left up ,,,, lol

They should be using weighted rope, any rope that gets caught in my prop will get cut.
Some lazy gits round here can't be bothered shortening their ropes when moving into shallow water, when the certain shallow water is a bay popular with yachts and visiting boats their asking for trouble.

Most don't use weighted rope but at least around here the hank it up underneath the bouy so as long as you don't actually shave the bouy you won't hit anything.
