Disappointing day!

Over the last few months I’ve been sorting out the smaller Nashers 2.8M SIB.
Its now got an airdeck instead of wooden boards, and the old heavy 4.5HP Johnson has been replaced with a much lighter and newer 4HP Merc.

Today we planned to explore Fareham Creek to try it out.

It was on the top of the car upside-down when through the sunroof I noticed a glint of sunlight, the sheet of Hypalon that makes up the original deck had separated from the tubes for about 2 feet along either side.

Que 2 very disappointed lads, and one disappointed Dad.

Being on top of the car in the sun whilst we had dinner obviously didn’t help, but the main issue is the air deck being so much thicker than the wooden boards had forced the joints apart.

I’ve glued the joints back together, but I’m surprised the joints are only about ½ inch wide.

What I plan to do is reinforce the overlaps all round the bottom and in certain places on the inside.

What I need however is about 6M of between 70 and 100mm wide strips of Hypalon.
Anybody any ideas where the cheapest place to source this would be?
Doesn’t matter at all about the colour.

I’ll also need to buy some glue in larger quantities than normal, again any ideas as to the cheapest place?

i'm not sure if it would be the cheapest but i'm sure keiron at the ribshop would be able to sort out the hypalon and glue easily. He has always been accomodating when ive needed random sized bits.

sorry to hear that, you must have all been gutted

You can have the left over bits of a 2.8 metre yamaha dinghy I butchered a while back, ( an attempt to have inner tubes of my 4m) - Ill bring it all to the church tomorrow night - its pretty good nick including the blowup v keel bit I mentioned before - favourite price of course

The air floor itself is almost certainly PVC (I haven't heard of drop stitched hypalon air floors). It may be that the rest of the boat is hypalon, but I was unaware of any SIBs that use a mix of hypalon tubes and bottoms with PVC air floors.

Would have thought that the tube makers out there would be able to sort out some offcut strips for you.

To be fair, as mentioned its a Nasher built special

Its only the Hypalon SIB I'm working on as the airdeck itself is perfect.

It's turning into Frankenstiens SIB, being repaired and modified with bits of your old one.

I presume when it died you found a donor card nailed to the transom

Although if its PVC as suggested by PT I may not be able to use the bits

Good luck with it - hopefully you'll get a few days where the humidity is low enough for an effective bond.

Just a quick update.

The SIB turned out to be PVC all along.

The images show the airdeck in place, and the additional strength I've added.

I glued 3 inch wide strips of PVC over the join outside and inside using Polymarine 2-part PVC adhesive.

Thanks to Ollyit for the PVC, it was cut from the remains of an old SIB floor he gave me that he'd already robbed the tubes from.

I found the crucial part was to prime the PVC with Acetone, which melts a surface layer ready for the first coat of glue.

Its already been tried out by the three of us a few weeks ago on Fareham creek, and having now used the SIB in both guises I can confirm the Airdeck is far superior to the wooden slats it came with.
The lighter single cylinder 4HP Mercury has also proved to be so much better than the heavier 4.5HP Johnson it replaced.

The smaller Nashers now can't wait to get their boat out in Start bay in a few weeks time whilst we're in Devon.

The engine is @20Kgs with a small amount of fuel in its built in tank.

The boat I don't know about, i'll try to weigh it somehow.

I'd guess its about the same weight as the engine, most of which is the wooden transom.
