Cracked Hull, please help!

Hey Guys

Looking for some advice, as you can see in the pics below the bow of my SR4 has started to split. Im not really sure how its done this!? The pictures don't really show it but there seems to be a lot of green vegetation where the split is, not sure if this has had anything to do with it. Anyway this is obviously pretty worrying and I want to but it right. Is this a job that I can easily fix myself? or would it best be left to the professionals? I was thinking of just patching it with some fibreglass but I don't want to compromise my boat for trying to save a few quid!

Any advice would be much appreciated!

i would reinforce the insde of the deck with fibreglass if thats possible ? then grind the crack out and fill it with either west system of fibreglass resin with strands of glass in it then glass over the keel to give it extra strength as long as you take your time with it theres no rwason why you cant do it yourself
but im sure there are others on hear that will tell you different

sorry i meant the inside of the hull not deck

It's not a huge job if as mentioned you can get to the inside easily, I'd even consider cutting the deck to get to the inside if you can't already.
Maybe install a round hatch.

It's very important that you cut back to good fibreglass first even though this will make the hole bigger initially but you must get all the wet stuff out and let the surrounding areas dry before attempting a repair.

Where abouts are you? as I'm sure somebody could come and help, I'll do it myself if you are reasonably local.

Thanks for the help, I live on the South coast of Devon, not sure if thats any where near you? The deck should easily come of as its wooden and just screwed down, only problem is though I've got the self flooding hull, wouldn't this make it impossible to reach the inside damaged are, without cutting a hole through that?

I have a new tenant about to take over a unit, he's apparently a spot-on GRP marine laminator. He might be glad of the work. We're nr. Falmouth.

2 Marine fabricators, 1 small o/b repairer and a GRP man. An Etec spannerman would be good now.

Thanks Kernow. Madly I do quite enjoy doing that type of stuff, and in fact have been known to spend a few hours working on other peoples boats just to help out.

Unfortunately South Devon is a long way from Portsmouth, and I'm sure he doesn't want to wait until my Dartmouth trip at the end of August.

I was in Dartmouth yesterday morning, lovely place, speaking to a local he was telling me about filming of the Onedin Line back in the 70's there, ......? Gilmour and Anne Stalybrass stayed on and lived there for years.
Not sure if your ribbing but he added the trip up the dart to Totnes is about 10 miles and the scenery is excellent.

It is a very nice trip, we unfortunately can't do it in The Nashers Revenge as the Suzuki DT200EFI have on the back does not like running at tickover for too long.
We've been meaning to try going up river in the smaller Nashers SIB and will probably have a go this summer.

We launch at the slip next to the higher ferry and head out of the harbour into Start bay to visit various beaches.

As usual I'll soon be posting details of dates etc as it's always nice to meet up with everyone.
