OK guys or ask a chemist then if that makes you happy

Hopwever, in countries like Portugal, Spain, SFrance, Italy and Greece there are garages that will wash your engine and the under-shashi down with a mixcture of diesel, detergent and hot water. All residues drain into the mains.

Manos the Chemist promoted himself to A PHYSISIT

Manos, unless this is bio-diesel, you'd get in a lot of trouble in the UK washing this mixture into a main drain. (if you were found out!) Mind you, even bio-diesel would probably be frowned on as well.

Richard I know this. Is an offence here in the UK not to dispose properly any petroleum or petroleum related products (which I do incidentally).
However, in other countries in Europe I don't think the law is the same as it is here in the UK. Although polluting the environment is a criminal offence everywhere in Europe.
Diesel is a biodegradable product. Is made out of natural resources and it disburses and absorbed in the environment (slowly I have to say). Is like a form of long disolving fertiliser.
Meaning that, where a major oil tanker disaster has occurred (like the EXXON VALDEZ for example) studies have shown that marine life, after of a dead period, has grown and has developed much better than it was before the disaster. These studies are published but they are never advertised for obvious reasons.
Same applies to other areas which were polluted by diesel too.

I am not saying that is a good thing to go around and pollute the sea and the environment in general by poring diesel in the oceans and the mountains, what I am saying is that a bit of diesel never harmed any one. If any one spills 200 grms of diesel (that is how much is required to wash the under-shashi of a Range Rover) on his front lawn or tiles or garden it will NOT kill any of the grass or plants.

corrosion on jeeps/cars

Manos is breaking the law and causing an offence under the Water Resources Act 1991. What he has done is potentially punishable by an 20k fine and/or two years in prison.

Do not become a misguided sheep and do the same as he has done.

He is totally wrong in assuming diesel is biodegradable. It has hundreds of OTHER chemicals which clean and protect the engine as it is used.

Contary to Manos's protestations Diesel and its additives are carcenogenic and are well know for triggering Cancer in Humans.

The statement that the Exon Valdez Disaster has promoted marine life is also eroneous.
The oil kills all the non tolerant species and causes a flourish of growth in the tolerant species which will eventually cause the tolerant species population to reach unsustainable levels and collapse killing even the tollerant species in the long term.

Look at for info on a similar case;

The best method is to rinse off with lots of water or keep your car out of the salt water! (A company called Marlow make this amazing device called rope!)
