Converting an arctic 28 to inboard diesel

One and a half year ago I bought an arctic 28 and wanted to convert it to inboard diesel. In octobre we bought a yanmar 440hp, but sold it because of the extra costs for gearbox and sterndrive....

After picking it up and store it here, we take off the console and seating.After that we began dismantling the deck. Like Martini, this was a hell of a job, with all screws and treadmaster in the way... We finally were ready with the deck...Pics to follow

Yes it's Phil's yard..Bought it in feb 2008.. After we sold the yanmar 440hp, we bought a complete package at coastalrides: Volvo D6 330hp. We took out the 2 middle stringers where the aft tank was situated(easier said than done). we left the front tank and placed a new deck of 12mm wood with 3 layers of GRP. We powder coated all fittings and made two front lockers. The engine will be mounted instead of the aft tank, so we made engine beds with 7 layers of roving and 7 layers of GRP. We took 4 steel plates after the 7th layer. We splitt the engine from the sterndrive and use a volvo patented jackshaft to get the weight more in the middle of the boat and put the console above the engine. For safety we use protecting casings both sides of the shaft. Pics to follow...

After taken the old deck off, we removed al foam and cleaned inner part of the boat, after that, we put all foam back:

Sorry, I only got mobile pics. I'll take a camera with me from now on.
Bought a console to fit over the engine and use it as hatch too. Arrange the parts to rebuilt engine to jackshaft... First we used 12mm ply to create the deck and made it ready for fitting. Used almost the same amount of screws as before in the deck. Then used 3 layers of GRP, and include the side wood where the tube is fitted. Anti slip deck by topcoat and mandurax sand. Made an engine bin from foam and glasfibred it.Transom raised with wood/GRP. And openings in the deck to install jack shaft etc, which will be covered by aluminium....

Artic 28 conversion

Hi am thinking of converting an Artic 28 to in board diesel with jet drive so was wondering are you happy with the end result of your project. Looks great but how does it perform.

Hi,

Sorry for the late reply. We have a D6 330hp Volvo installed on a jack shaft with sterndrive. Top speed around 36 knots. Very good seakeeping and incredible boat in heavy seas. I prefer the sterndrive above the jet, because of the loss of power and slow pick up when jumping a wave due to lack of water.
