Mmm, depends how ambitiouus you get!

Starter for 10... 5.5 to 6.0m RIB, 90 to 115hp, £10 to £12k s/h for a good one?

Go for Humber, Ribcraft, Ribtec, Delta, I reckon in that sort of size/cost??

But that's just speculation... Have you done much in boats before? If not, then don't think about the boat yet, think about yourself... get out on the water, see what you like. Either get out with some RIBsters (always looking for an excuse to get out on the water) or go on a course (RYA P.B. 1&2&adv.) then see if the bug bites

As Richard says:

What do you want the RIB for?
Whats your experience level?
Whats the budget?

Then we can help!

I've done quite a bit of dinghy sailiing and a bit of cruising on small yachts and gone out occassionally on a frineds speed boat (is that a frwoned upon term?). My inclination is definitely towards the speed and fun side. I live literally 5 mins from the hard and it would get plenty of use. Thanks for the advice.

Now you're talking! You just need to get out and try a few different RIBs. I joined BIBOA last year and was treated right royally by all, and by RIBnet members. Spent hours on lots of people's RIBs before buying mine... off Alan who posted above!

My thoughts - maximum overall length for your budget, the seat and console layout that you want, and a modern high-tech engine. Then pop it in the water and have some fun

BTW - last year's Southampton boat show had a few different RIBs you could go out on. Useful, but limited to 15mins as a passenger.

Comfort

As most have comented, you need to decide exactly what is is you want to do. I'm a fair weather Ribster (boooo - hisss, I hear)and take the family out on nice days, have picnics, follow the dolphins and swim with the seals. If that's your idea of fun then I'd look for something with comfort, style and grace. Have a look at the Zodiac range. I had (up until about an hour ago believe it or not) a Zodiac Yachtlyine II 4.20 Deluxe. This is a fab boat seating 5 in comfort (if not luxury), quick enough to pump the blood with a 50 on the tail and comfortable enough in a bit of a chop.
Some of these bigger RIBs are, in my opinion, very basic. Great utility RIBS for diving, moving people and gear and yes, without question fast, comfortable and safe. I sold mine for £7750 on a 1999 plate, trailer, etc etc and in showroom condition.
In about 3 hours from now I'm collecting my new (2nd hand) Zodiac Medline 1 which, is the next step up from the Yachtline and offers greater seating (9), larger engine (70) and the crucial "Deep V". Again, she's equipped as a pleasure craft and comes with sun canopy, picnic table, shower, boarding ladder, lots of instrumentation etc etc.

Anyway, I hope my comments assist you, they will no doubt trouble some ! Good luck.

keithm thats very good advise from MeMe but i suspect he's not read your post through properly as you stated you "want to go fast and have fun" and this you ain't going to do sitting behind the picknick table.

Get yourself a smallish boat and strapon the maximum amount of horse power the transom can take and go hell for leather, power to weight ration means your'll outrun bigger boats with bigger engines but your'll fair worse off in a heavy sea, thats the downside but its still a lot of fun if you dont mind getting wet, your'll be able to tow water toys and wake boards, if you want a sun canopy then spend the afternoon in the beer garden.

MeMe no offence meant, horses for course and when my familys old enough to come boating with me i may have to buy a bigger style old mans boat.

RI reviewed the Tornado 5m rib in their latest issue. It got a very positive write up and seems reasonable priced. Compare it to the Selva review in the same issue and the Tornado comes out well above.

If you do want a Yachtline, I have a 4.95m with 70hp sitting in the back garden looking for a new home.

There are 5 of us and it allows us all to sit in reasonable comfort (2 on tubes).

Engine is a 2 stroke Johnson - regularly serviced and starts every
time.

The hull is a deep V (next one up from MeMe's) and all tubes are excellent (new valves this year).

Does fine around the Isle of Man.

If you are interested, drop me a PM.
