Clogged water system!!

One door opens and another slams in your face!!!
Tomorrow is my last day for testing before our trip to the IOM, I borrowed my father in laws Yamaha 4hp 4stroke to use as an aux engine. I cleaned the carb, jets, tank and fuel lines. The engine started first pull and selects gears fine! Not surprising as the engine has only ever been used as a backup.
BUT, no stream of water from the tell tale!!! I checked the impeller and all good! Nice and pliable with no signs of cracking. Checked the thermostat and it opens as it should in a pot of water in the hob.
I left the stat cover off and started the engine in a barrel, NO water reaching the engine!! I can only assume a blockage in the system. I suspect the engine hasn't been flushed after use and corrosion is causing the obstruction, have any of you guys had the same problem and any tips for clearing?? Thanks in advance, Tim.

have you checked the tube coming up from the pump, or tell tale blocked (gives an indication if that's blocked that it hasn't been flushed)? Try putting water into the tell tale hose and see if you get any flow from the other end of engine or thermostat.

The tell-tale can block on these smaller engines. Run a length of nylon strimmer cord up the tell-tale when you're running the engine in a barrel/bucket. Works on my Mariner 4hp auxilliary.

I've the leg off again this morning, thermostat out and can't blow up the pickup pipe from the pump, I can back flush from the tell tale but nothing comes out anywhere else. However the telltale holds quite an amount of water but still no joy, obviously a blockage deep somewhere! Down at the caravan so very little tools with me! Currently looking for a wire coat hangar or the likes.....
