cleaning Hypalon

Just got a rib with hypalon tubes that had been in storage for 5 years. the tubes are covered with what appears to be mold. Read a lot of the posts about all the different cleaning products available and i'm sure they work well but I wonder if a simple combination of vinager,baking soda and water would be effective and not damage the hypalon. All thoughts appreciated.

Most people here use TFR (traffic film remover) diluted or a product designed for cleaning tubes.

They won't do the Hypalon any harm I doubt if they'll do much cleaning though.

I don't know if you can get it in the states but Autoglym Engine and Machine Cleaner will take just about anything off anything, I swear by it. It even takes Hypalon paint off your tubes, spray it on give it a rub and half the paint will be on your hand. I'm sure with a bit of elbow grease, it would take all the paint off.

I've got black scuff marks all over my RIB courtesy of other boaters tramping, perhaps even dancing, over my seats and tubes. I've used traffic film remover on some areas, but the shoe marks remain. Any tips on removing this from tubes, seats and GRP?

Quality TFR in a slightly stronger solution. Apply with a Scotchbrite pad and rinse immediately. This combo will remove anything including the grain in the Hypalon if not carried out with care.

Less aggresive than TFR, and something that I have used successfully on my tubes and upholstery is Starbrite 'Black Streak Remover'. Might be worth a go before you get into the 'heavy' stuff! For the GRP any good quality polish should do the job, but if it is really stubborn and for small areas try solvol autosol. Otherwise you could try Crystal Glo Restorer and Sealant available from cfsnet.co.uk, or there is some 3M stuff '3M Perfect-It Fast Cut Compound', which really is magic stuff for Gelcoat.

I asked the guys at Henshaws what to use to clean the matt finish tubes, they recommended cif and a plastic scourer or brush.

I used to use cif, not bad but required a good bit of elbow grease.

So, once you've cleaned your tubes. Is it worth the expense of applying any form of conditioner to maintain the shine, or is it a waste of time and money?

I don't bother. Tried the 3M conditioner a couple of times, very expensive, doesn't seem to go very far and doesn't seem to do a lot.

Got to say Andy that shiny tubes never look right to me. If you have time/energy/inclination I think polishing the stainless looks far more impressive
