"Stay well away from 'cheap' outboards. They are cheap for a reason. As a non-boater I'd get one from a dealer 2nd hand with a warranty as you're unlikely to know what to look for in a good/bad engine."

Maybe a wee tad harsh? I've had a good few cheap little outboards over the years & never had bother from any of them. The little Tohatsu based Mariner/Mercury two stroke engines are fairly bullet proof. The 4hp Evinrude I bought for £75 lasted 10 years with nothing more than annual lube service one set of plugs and one impeller. I certainly would be very careful about choosing a large outboard but the smaller ones are fairly basic and I've never managed to break one.

Maybe but with no knowledge of what to look for (for example of submersion and being told it was just surface rust, everything this age has some), I was just siding with caution.

A first boat should be a good experience, not one plagued with dodgy outboards! That said, if the OP is just trying to find out if he enjoys it or not, maybe risking a cheaper outboard is worth it.

I guess it's like buying your first car with no one to help you. Do you buy from a news paper and risk being sold a lemon and breaking down, but spending less in the first place.
OR..
Spend slightly more, buy from a dealer and get a 3/6 month warranty and some peace of mind.

Difference is breaking down at sea can be quite a bit more dangerous and depressing.

I agree with your point on breaking down at sea but in that particular circumstance having a warranty or not is probably academic, you're still going to have to get help or paddle home........ the literal difference between a guarantee and a warranty. Your contention, no doubt, is that this scenario is less likely to happen if the engine was bought from a dealer. You have more faith than I. Contacts through clubs/friends etc you can generally find something that's worth buying.
As I said, if it were a large outboard with the prospect of potential "eye watering" bills I would be very careful and the dealer / warranty route is no doubt the safer one

AA routefinder says Pontypool to Bournemouth is only 113 miles. Poole is just up the road with its nice big harbour so make a weekend of it & have a play with your new purchase.

Worth travelling to get the best selection, you won't always find what you're after 5 mins up the road.
My own boat came from Anglesey & that was 200 miles each way. I'd only seen photos & had a chat on the phone with the owner about it so I still needed to view & sea test it, which we did at Holyhead. Well worth the trip.

+1 you could buy a 3 month old engine that was dropped overboard first time out & is now knackered so paying more doesn't always mean it's better
Best ask advice on here before parting with cash there's a good chance you will get inside info on a dealer & maybe even a private seller
