cheap cable protection

This may help future searchers. Often the control cables, starter motor cables, depth sounder cable and engine alarm cables have to be run from the console to the engine above deck. A cheap way of protecting them is to use 3" land drain rigid plastic pipe. Of course water gets in and out, but the cables themselves are protected from physical damage from tanks, pots and boots etc. Looks tidy too. 5 metres cost me €12 from a farm shop.

Plan on replacing the pipe every few years. The plastic gets brittle with UV exposure, and breaks into very sharp edges.

Thanks jyasaki, however uv exposure may be slightly more of a problem in California than it is in the west of Ireland.

If the sun ever comes out here, the pipe will probably start sporting freckles

I've used 2" flexible tubing from Wickes (DIY store) which is sold to protect pond wiring as this apparently has some UV protection.

I also used the 1" diameter version of this to protect a 15ft run of fuel line.

Not as cheap as the land drain though !

Paint the pipe with ordinary household exterior latex paint. it will protect it from UV.
