cheap alternative to gecko helmet?

Don't know. Probably not, it has the internal adjustable head strap and there isn't a big peak on the helmet to catch wind. Plus the weight of it may hold it down anyway?

I take your point though as I hadn't thought of it.

Chin straps are 30 pence.
Builders hard hats we use them at our company.

Looks like a builder's hard hat to me, albeit with a nicely integrated visor. I suspect it will feel like one when you wear it too. I suppose it depends why you want a gecko:

- to look "cool" and pretend you are a hard core ribber - FAIL
- to protect you from risk of injury when your head hits the console in a stuff - Probably fail (as builders hard hat is designed to protect from falling objects not your head hitting a solid surface)
- to keep the rain/spray off - probably will work OK if you can keep it on your head.
- to keep your head warm on cold days - doubt there is an "insulation" so probably fails on this count too.

Oh polwart you misery chops! Cheer up. Just thought id share the hat so those who don't want to spend a fortune may have another option.

-Didn't want a yellow one like Draper sell, so happier with white
-Just want it for when we get caught out so my eyes don't get stung to bits with the salty spray and unable to see.
-keeping head warm, not too fussed, but it will undoubtedly help keep it drier, therefore warmer.
-Can only help if we "stuff", better than not having it.
- will stay on as it has chin strap.

Better than not having one, obviously a gecko better, but f*cking expensive.

Paul, this wasn't a dig at you. You've obviously identified a practical need for one and an affordable solution which you hope will do what you want. Good for you, and I look forward to hearing your "tested in anger" feedback so that others at the "practical ribbing" end of the scale can possibly benefit too. It was more a 'social commentary' on the 'fashion' for Geckos...

I do agree there appear to be more and more "all the gear, no idea" cash rich people in ribbing than 15 years ago when it was mainly function before form type of boating. Now some have Full dry suit, geckos with intercom, twin 250s and 12" colour plotter.......to go from lymington to cowes on the regatta week!

only got to look at the sport versions of Humber to see the developing market.

Will report on the "bob the builder hat" in due course. I only boat about 10 times a year due to work, so it may well serve my purpose on the two occasions we get caught. (also planning some longer trios so may be handy)

Hate to say it, but I've had several of these and have been using them for quite a while.We use them for loading fuel onto the tankers.
I think they are a waste of time for ribbing-the visors scratch very easily from even minor use and come partially disconnected from the hat without it being obvious they've done so.
This means when you push the visor back up it scratches itself on the inside of the hat making whole areas of them opaque.

I'm still using my old Chinese fighter pilots helmet though

Damn, doesn't bode well! I haven't see them in the flesh, picking up Friday from shop, but she said if I don't like the look of them they will refund me.

Not sure why you would want a helmet on a rib unless your doing safety boat stuff or want to pretend that your a lifeboat.

If you want something to protect your head get a decent canoeing or windsurfing type helmet and goggles - or don't be such a cheap git and buy a Gecko.

Not really the helmet that I'm after and jisms helmet (no pun meant!) is probably overkill.

I wanted something to stop salt spray in the face, I've been caught before and had 40 mins of lashing spray and rain in the face and it's painful! Sunglasses just didn't work.

Geckos are about £140, so for two, seems a lot for something I'd use once a season. Just exploring alternatives.

I do all my boating on the west of scotland and I have for years used a good pair of goggles and they have never failed me.

Funnily enough I ordered one of these today for my use at work as I have used them for years working on ships (mine was more than 5 years old and due for replacement)
I wouldn't say they would be suitable for use on a RIB even with a chin strap but it takes all kinds I suppose and there are no absolutes.
I can see a use for helmets on a RIB but not very often for me, but often enough that I have two geckos on order!

Cheap ones are no use you need a good seal to keep your eyes safe from the salt.
