Changing the control

I intend changing the suzuki (Morse) control for something better for the following reasons;

1)the boat can't maintain a constant speed because the lever won't hold a setting, boat just gets slower. The adjusting screw is all the way in and it still does it.

2)I don't like the lack of a nuetral lock,I know a lot of people don't agree, but I think it's dangerous.

3)Removing the chance of going straight from forward to reverse by someone learning and threatening the gearbox.

4)I want the lever to be on the right hand side of the control box,this would but the lever,trim switch in the hand the way the manufacturer intended.

Has anyone changed a morse type control for something better,where there any problems doing it?. Or is it straight forward.

agree with 2 and 3 entirely

Yeah we have swopped out a throttle control from an old Johnsohn to a new Tohatsu (these really are very nice Throttles) providing your cable ends and the new controls are the same is very easy.

aftermarket controls can be bought from teleflex and some other manufacturers but they often don't feature a trim switch. The Standard control cabling is I believe 33c (could be wrong and I suspect we'll soon find out

) but that may not be what is used by the Suzuki or Tohatsu.

Your suzuli and Tohatsu dealer could confirm that, you could also consider a new suzuki control cos I don't think outboard controls normally come without an interlock,

Did you say that the control is central mounted and if it is what make is it.

The control is standard suz( I think it's morse..),it has trim and tilt but no lock and is centrally mounted.

I've noticed that 33c is mentioned quite a lot on sites.

What do you think of this one?

It looks OK You can fit a discrete kill switch But WJ is most correct!

Also looking at livorsi controls,they seem pretty similar.

My only concern and I'll have to clear it up before parting with the readies,is there a lock in nuetral, they all talk about non starting of engines if not in nuetral,but not a lock.

I'm also a little concerned about fitting, prob end up going very fast backwards and very slow forwards..

I would pick Livorsi over Gaffrig since they "split up". Two lever controls get over some of the issues - Yamaha make very good kll switches that can be mounted separately - we use them on the race boat and elsewhere.

IBWET,

I fitted a Morse SL3 sidemount unit to my RC. Fits on the console really well and is very comfortable to use - no creeping etc and it's got interlock and start-in-gear protection, trim switch etc

It does need a seperate start switch and kill switch but it meant I could put them where was convenient rather than being forced to have them on the throttle control.

I'll give you a shout if I'm down at the weekend and you can have a look if you like.
