I remember that well, the "Riverdance". A bitterly cold and windy february night and early morning down on that beach as part of the CG rescue team. Followed later in the morning with the bets as to if it was going back to sea on the end of a rope...or back down the road in skips. The skips won!
I went to the meeting as the coastguard on scene rep later in the day where the SoS rep held his meeting (secretary of state's representative). A nice guy and a man of awesome power. How far is the boat off the promenade? Gave him the answer and a fax went off to Whitehall or wherever. A few minutes later a fax came back. An exclusion zone of so many metres now exists. This meeting is not a democracy, my arrangement with the govt is back me or sack me...so if I'm not here in the morning you will know they didn't back me!

Faulty ballast tank? operator opens valve transfers ballast shuts valve simples. I spent 13 years working on these type of ships and others. If a ballast tank is faulty it leaks thats about it. It will only go into the double bottoms and can be corrected quite easily. If someone makes a cockup yep then its a faulty ballast tank. In honesty there will be loads of speculation I am just glad that no harm has come to anyone on board to my knowledge. Regards Jim

Whatever caused it isn't the problem now, it's how to remove it, nature might have a hand in this respect as we have high winds forecast for the end of the week, my advice would be, get you're arse in gear quickly

Agree Biff, strong currents running beneath her yesterday on Springs, shifting sands etc, likely to roll further if left IMHO

The statement about it may take a week to shift made me laugh, more like many months in my opinion as tide doesnt get much higher and it is at such an angle the centre of gravity must be way over. Bet it takes at least 3 months. I bet the ferry operators find it a pain with all the pleasure craft taking a look makes there job more difficult as I noticed many pleasure craft were nearly in the way of the ferries crossing near that stretch. Area best avoided.

Went out this morning. All calm and quiet in comparison to yesterday. Could see several people on board - the salvage team starting their assessment I guess.

Southampton Port survey launch looked to be carrying out a hydrographic survey of the area as I guess they will want to know which is the best direction to pull it off. Eventually.
