Buying boat w/trailer out of state

If I purchase a RIB with a trailer in NY, how do I bring it into NJ? Do I have to go to NY, make the purchase and leave the boat there and return to NJ to register the boat & trailer and then to back to NY again to bring it home?

Is there some one-time exception or temporary solution?

Thanks

Legally yes you need to register at least the trailer before transporting. Good luck with Jersey for registration , I thought CT was bad till I dealt with Jersey.

I found a thread on the Hull Truth Forum on this. The overwhelming consensus was to simply drive the trailer home one time without tags on the day of the purchase. It's very unlikely that you'll be pulled over and if you are you'll have the bill of sale and the title for the boat that you just purchased and most cops will let you go. the worst case scenario' is you' simply get a ticket.

Well sorta, not always simply a ticket. In CT that would be a ticket plus the trailer gets impounded.

This is probably a stupid question, but what happens when you tow your boat to a different state going on holiday?

Registration is valid and recognized in all 50 states and I believe Canada . So no issue going out of state with a registered trailer. I had to get a boat for a client who got stopped without registration. Thankfully they let him leave it in a close by parking lot and did not have it towed.

Thankfully some cops are nicer than others about it. I guess it probably comes down to how bad your break the law and how polite you are.

That was my first thought as well.

I would think you'd be fine with any current registration (or proof that you just purchased it.) I would advise against a test launch prior to having your ducks in a row, though.

Then again, state by state enforcement varies (dive shop manager was pulled over in New Jersey for exceeding the speed limit by 3mph, while trailing other cars, with traffic going 25mph faster in other lanes. Explanation? California license plate.)

Of course if there was a way to get a temporary tag in New Jersey I would do it. But, how do I get a tag for a trailer I don't own yet?

Why not hire a trailer in your own state and bring the whole rig back on it?

I've done this here......trip to Dell Quay to pick up a dory on a "good trailer"

It wouldn't have made it out the boat yard, let along conform to the requisite legalities.

Yep. It's not uncommon here, if the trailer is unroadworthy.

I see no reason to do the nested trailer thing. There has to be a way to get a purchased rig into the state legally.

Has the OP browsed the DMV site? Chatted with someone there (yeah, I know, lots of time on hold, phone tag, etc)? You could also call your local police or highway patrol, and ask them the best course of action.
