Buying a rib-narrowing the choice down.

Hi,
Many thanks for tha advice recieved so far. The choice of boat is slowly becominging clearer !
5m -6m rib, deep vee hull, 2st outboard 75-100HP bepending on boat, preferably a yammy. well known make which will have resale value, preferably british.

what boats are deep vee hulls, ? All the avon SRs? Humbers?(which ones5-6m) Ribtec?

can anyone give me a reasonable list of deep V 5-6m ribs?

i think an SR5.4 ticks all the boxes. but what about others?

cheers

Martyn

I guess you are buying second hand? This will narrow down your choice as to what is available at the time.

You can't go wrong with the seariders. Humber is also very good (i have one)
But there are many more makes out there.

I have and humber ocean pro 5.3 + tohatsu 90tldi. very good value for money, but it is more of an work boat style. If you are after something with a bit more bling then maybe look at ribeye etc

If i had the money i would go for a ribcraft, they are very nice boats.

rib choice.

yes, secondhand 5K max and i dont mind a project, dont want bling, i like utilitarian looking boats, really like seariders and humbers, grey or orange tubes too, dont like the look of the med style boats,

Ribcraft are absoulutely solid boats, although slightly more expensive (you pay for what you get). Deep v hull, excellent sea keeping ability. Have a look at my Alderney video to give you an idea. Although the 5.85 is likely to be outside your price bracket, I know that the smaller Ribcrafts are also pretty damm good.

not all humbers have a deep vee hull, the attack and assault range are only medium vee, the deep vee hull starts at the destroyer and ocean pro range.

deep vee hull ribs.

Fantastic advice!
so we are narrowing it down to a ribtec, an SR5.4 or a destroyer
I suspect if i want to stay within my budget i will have to go for an SR5.4 or an old humber. what about ospreys? i have seen a few of those, older ones cheap, which would need re tubing and an engine upgrade, having said that even with a budget retube and a newer secondhand engine it looks from what i have seen to be cheaper to buy a complete outfit,(cheaper than the sum of its parts)
bit like needing an engine for my landrover, ended up buying someones pride and joy(isuzu trooper) and chopping it up for scrap!

I wouldn't discount the humber Attaque. they have been around since the Ark so there will be examples that fall into your budget. One Humber Attaque even crossed the Atlantic The Humber Atlantis is a bit longer and wider. With a very low deck there is a feeling of being in not on a a rib. Both have stood up to the club diving role well for many years so pretty indestructable.

Have a look at our post about our Ribcraft 4.8...It'll run rings round some bigger boats, and is probably amongst the most seaworthy and strongly built for it's size. We love it!

I would! Unless you're only going to use it on a lake.

True, but it drifted across so the shallow V hull wasn't an issue

I would want to carry, always 3 adults, 1 child, 2 dogs, occasionally an extra 4 adults, Having a look at a searider SR5.4 (project) soon which is well within my price bracket, fingers crossed!

The attaque and assault range are inshore ribs, the destroyer and ocean pro are the offshore range, horses for courses if you know what i'm saying. If you take an inshore rib offshore and conditions out at sea take a turn for the worse then you can expect trouble with at least a very slow and uncomfortable journey home, an offshore rib will tackle the same conditions with ease

Ribtec 585 if you can find one, plenty of deck space rated to carry 10/12 people (dont know where they would all sit), solidly build, a nice soft ride and very capable in most sea states.

Its also worth considering the Osprey Viper nice and beamy and also well built and very capable.

The Avon Searider is also a great boat but has less internal space than others. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but 5 or 6 people on a SR5.4 would be a right boatfull even without the mutt's.

I think the best advice is to be patient, there will be a bargain along at some point, the question is can you wait for it?

I've had 6 in my 5.4 with loads of comfort and lots of room still to spare. What size are the dogs tho' and will they be happy in the boat in a big sea would be my question.

Regards
Ian

Yer 5.4 searider is a proper sea going rib with offshore capability, so is the Humber destroyer which is a popular offshore dive boat with lots of dive clubs, i like them both. The only thing that i would knock about these ribs is the beam! most ribs of similar size feel very narrow compared to my viper which has a beam of 2.5 metres which gives you loads of deck space and keeps you very stable especially in a following sea.
