Burrs on A Frames.

I renewed all the wiring on my nav lights today feeding it through the A-Frame and under the hull thinking that it would be a straight forward job anyway's I was surprised to find the amount of razor sharp edges and burrs on the A-Frame even on the pre drilled holes where the wiring goes through it just shreds the wire if your not careful, not to mention you hands, blood everywhere. Also the plates on the side of the frame where the flare boxes go are razor sharp (hazard for kids)

With it being s/s if you file the edges then it will just rust so what's the answer ?

You pay hundreds of £s for these A-Frames and they sell them like this It's a wonder no one has lost a finger.

Got a Dremel? Emery cloth won't cause rusting, just don't use a file.

All the A frame wiring holes should have rubber grommets too.

Emery cloth seems to be the cheapest option

It won't rust if you file it - if its stainless steel which I'm sure it is.

It will if you file it with a carbon steel file

If the file has been used on mild steel beforehand, then you're in danger of impregnating mild steel filings into the stainless, when working away with the file.

Yep, it's the same deal as not cleaning a stainless prop with a wire brush.

A flapper disc on a 4.5" angle grinder is pretty good for cleaning up stainless.

you contaminate the stainless with carbon and it will bleed you can pickle the area after and polish after .

cobolt burrs work ok with no contamination

At work where we build and work with stainless steel we use files all the time and have no problem. The secret is just to use them for stainless and nothing else. The contamination comes from a file that has been used to file ferrous steels or cast iron.

I'm sure you'll be fine using a small round file to deburr some holes, it's definatly the cheapest option next to grommets.

Anything you use that will roughen the surface will make it prone to staining unless its polished up after.

These polishing flap discs from Dronco are very good where they have access.

They come in coarse, medium and fine. The coarse will take a bit of material off, normal flap disc first if you need more off. The fine will get you a reasonable finish, not polished but close.
