It is so difficult to quantify such costs - you often see huge figures quoted for air sea rescue work etc - yes it DOES cost a fortune to keep a helicopter in the air per hour BUT often the things are already up anyway - training or whatever.

The RAF have often helped farmers by using Chinooks to carry hay bales etc - cost effective it is not but they classify it as training - they would have been putting in the hours anyway.

The RNLI have already paid for the boat - it is needed anyway - obviously wear and tear does play a part but again things are often replaced after a certain number of years anyway.

mebbe the rnli should bill people who are rescued?
