Boating torches

I just bought some of these torches as I wanted one to bolt on my air rifle:-

Bloody bright LED torches on ebay

They just arrived from HK, and I'm impressed enough that 2 of them are going to become permanent additions to the boating kit. 3 brightness settings, plus a strobe setting and an 'SOS' mode where they flash 'SOS' constantly. O-ring sealed too.

Full brightness will light up things 100m away clearly.

Those are fancy looking torches, does the build quality seem good?

I've just got a LED Lenser with focus on my M4, seriously bright and doesn't seem to mind the recoil

Bought one of these in TK Maxx for £12 at the weekend. http://www.dewalt.com/tools/safety-p...pga-3aaal.aspx

It's a sturdy thing.

Build quality seems pretty good. I had to reseat the lens o-ring on one, but that was because the retaining ring wasn't fully screwed in. They'll get a dose of silicone grease on the o-rings before putting them on the boat. Apparently they are waterproof to IPX8 and it looks like they may well be.
They aren't focusable, but the beam is fairly tight anyway. I just took one out into the garden and I can just see it hitting the (low) clouds.

Multi led torches are old hat these days, I thought they were great till I got a Cree led torch.

Night and day comes to mind! 100 foot spotting, brighter than any mag light I had or multi led torch. You need to see one to believe it...

I am now looking buying a P7 led lenser. This is supposed to be very bright.

I have a Luxeon star 6 watt led torch, thats bloody bright, trouble is the batteries bloody dear! it takes 3 CR123 and they last a few hours, and its no good buying cheap batteries off ebay, they last even less.
first time i got caught without batteries i bought 3 at the supermarket without looking at the price till later........£18 bar 3 pence
in general i prefer my Pezl head torch that takes AAAs its not as bright, at 1 watt, but still illuminates my whole garden better than the 2x80 watt PAR floodlamps on the wall that wasnt cheap though, £50 ish.

The LED Lenser P7 is ok; it has a 200 lumen rating. For real 'owl killing' potential you need the 1000 lumen X21. Watch the video here:

Yes, that's right. I have a 100-lumen LED Lenser police torch and the night I bought it I shone the thing in my face to see if the brightness had dulled. I was still seeing a large yellow patch five hours later and shat my knickers thinking that I had permenently damaged my eyes. Beware: LED Lenser torches are insanely bright. The X21 I mentioned earlier is the brightest torch available at the moment. Oh, and it costs £240 by the way.

I don't.... However, I'm currently pondering how viable it'd be to make new headlights for my bike with CREE leds...
