Boating Myths

A couple of recent posts on here have got me thinking. Are there things that we do with our boats or believe about their use that are not particularly well founded? I refer to practises or deeply held convictions that are neither based on our actual experience, nor explained or justified by logic. I'm not so much thinking about fishermen's superstitions (i.e. no green clothing) but about what Richard Dawkins would probably call a Meme - a self perpetuating thought process or belief, or what Redmond O'Hanlon might regard as a Fetish, an apparently useless item that we feel might spare us from an otherwise uncontrollable fate.

I won't give boating examples of what I mean - that would just start trouble (God forbid...) but any divers here will remember the exuberant "drying" of regs with compressed air that enlivened every dive boat / quayside in the 1990s. Another would be the practice of hanging a spoon in an open bottle of champagne to "keep it fizzy"; no really, some do this.

Any suggestions?

Not changing the name of the boat must be the number one myth/superstition. I've known people to be stuck with boats with the worst names in the world but wont change 'em coz they may sink

The reason behind changing a boats name was you'd have to sand the old name off or plane it off if it was carved in the hull which made the hull thinner and less seaworthy!

Its bad luck to P I G in Staithes!

No green plants.

Keep a black cat healthy and happy (meaning fat and catered to) on board.

No whistling.

No women on board.

For fishing:

No bananas.

A 50 watt spotlight on the A frame pointed at the Helm's face and un-dimmable is required for night diving - so that the Helm's night vision is not completely burnt out they can twiddle the brightness of their nav screens down a touch...

When leaving harbour never go in a straight line, make sure your back end fishtails from side to side, this is totally deliberate and not because the boat cannot be kept in a straight line
