Boating Holidays

Hi all

Having upgraded my boat last month, not a rib I'm afraid, hopefully you guys won't mind that.

I'm looking at going away in June to the south coast, I'm thinking devon, the Solent or even Cornwall if its worth the journey. i have been looking on here and found Pentewan but I'm really looking for a caravan/holiday home with a marina near by so that i can leave the boat on the water for the week. ideal with places to visit by boat.

thanks

Hi Ben - try this link

Campsites with Boat Launching Facilities or Moorings - UK Camp Site Articles

It's got a list of campsites with moorings, etc.

Only know because I am also currently trying to find a nice campsite on the Southcoast where I can take my new toy with me :-)

Solent and Devon are great, the other one definitely isn't worth it.

You won't be disappointed with Pentewan you can get a weeks launch deal with a tractor which saves some of the hassle of daily launching
We had several good holidays there a few years ago and it's realy a good spot and plenty of places to visit by boat
I think Mollers is probably trying to put you off so he can keep it for himself!

I actually stayed at Pentewan once with the boat, it's a long story, it's only 15m up the coast.

I'm possibly a little spoilt living where I do, but I thought that the tractor thing was a PITA and a tad hairy with a lumpy onshore slop running.

If you have to come to Cornwall, Penmarlem, just around the corner up the Fowey river, is the way to go with it's deepwater pontoons. The whole operation inc. camping is run by the Harbour Commissioners office and is very slick.
They also offer a 'free' tender service from Fowey back to Polruan side should you miss the Ferry.

Another positive vote for Penmarlem, only slight issue is the very steep slip.

If you fancy the Solent, Riverside Campsite is next door to Mercury Yacht Harbour with slipway and visitor moorings.

Mollers is correct about the lumpy onshore, you do get days where it's unsuitable to launch.
We were usually 2 week family holidays so weren't bothered about the odd none boating day.We would typically just get the body boards out or take the bikes out.
Being right on the beach with the caravan meant Pentewan was ideal for us with quite small kids at the time
Obviously not for everyone though
I'm sure if we keep trying we might coax info on more of Cornwall's hidden jems out of Mollers 😉

Mylor works great with some sheltered areas if there is wind or round to Falmouth - plenty of spaces to stay from tents to caravans and posh pods.

Torquay / Brixham gives you plenty of options as does Dartmouth.

Plymouth does too as will Weymouth / Portland.

We're doing the Solent this year, staying in the forest and running out of Lymington.

You cant beat Poole for a great base to explore from, you have access to Poole Harbour and can cruise the Jurrassic coast, chapmans pool, lulworth cover, durdle door, Weymouth, swanage plus the solent, isle of wight cowes, Yarmouth, Southampton, beaulieu river, lymington, etc etc and some great beaches at sandbanks, studland and shell bay etc.

Plenty of marinas, my suggestions would be give them a call and see if they do 'holiday berths or parks' Rockley Boat Park, Cobbs Quay, Parkstone Bay etc.

Rockley Caravan and static home park = Rockley Park Caravan Holiday Park | Haven® Official Site

The boat park is on site down a small road, direct access to Poole Harbour

South Devon is good - from Brixham Dartmouth, Salcombe Teignmouth & Exmouth are all within reach plus some really good beaches. Also Torbay is relatively sheltered apart from Easterlies. Looads of stuff to do if the conditions aren't too good for boating

If you can nail the logistics, the Scilly Isles are magical when the weather is good. We base ourselves on Bryher, it's very well set up for the ribbing visitor.

The secret is in spotting or getting lucky with a weather window for the crossings out and back.
