When insuring your boat do you insure personal affects or use your home contents insurance.

Dunno, Steve.

I think you've got very little chance of your belongings being covered. The boat insurance covers the hull&fittings, engine, aux engine and electronics (GPS & VHF etc) detailed on the policy, nothing more. I guess that if your home insurance covers camera, sports clothes etc for sporting activities then that's a bonus.

Our Norwich Union annual travel insurance covers ourselves, though. As long as we don't set foot on a sailing yacht.

I'm currently with Mardon who seen ok though i still have an outstanding accident claim from last year, they need to be prompted to do anything and although they have now paid out fully they seem very slow at chasing my excess from the third party and i'm having to do this myself via a solicitor supplied by them even though i'm fully comp !!!!
Acid test of any insurer is when you need to make a claim !!!

As long as we don't set foot on a sailing yacht.

Is this a pathological dislike of sailing yachts or a serious insurance exclusion?

sailing..

No, I like sailing!

But the insurance company seems to think putting to sea in a little RIB with a big engine is a far safer bet than an ol' rag & stick jobbie!

I recently spent a lot of time phoning round for insurance when I upgraded to a bigger RIB, I settled on Mardon not only because of cost, but because my existing insurers had changed their policy so that even when wheel clamped I could not leave it unattended at say a motorway services. Basically the boat needed to be attended at all times unless clamped and locked behind a barrier.

Insurance in Ireland

Quick question on the subject, Can English insurance companies insure boats moored and used in Ireland? Also does anyone know of any good Irish Marine insurance companies?

My Ring 650 including towable toys came in at 391.02 so similar to mine. But it seems dear compared to 'aging youths' 220.
