Nice. I can imagine the hummmm of it at full chat.
is it a Detroit 8V72 or 12V72 sort of thing?
we had a v6 in a Bedford KM to fix once that sounded really nice. Picked up like a petrol.
The straight 6 sound really good too, heared one in a landing craft, think it was a Grey marine badged one.

Bit of a project I was involved with - repower of 16V2000 MTU's before, during, arriving and after. Messy job, the old engines leaked oil like a sieve.

'scuse me if I'm being thick, but it never occurred to me that you could have a 2 stroke diesel, dunno why, just never thought about it. I'm assuming that it's just the "top end" that's 2 stroke & the bottom end, crank, bearings etc will be conventionally oiled.

lifeboat engines are 2 stroke diesels but your right Dave they are not pure 2 strokes as they do have a valve down the cylinder
Remember one particular Tyne class lifeboat getting knocked down & pushed backwards by a very large wave that stalled one engine and with the force of the water acting on the prop restarted it up in reverse .
Though it took the crew a few moments to work out what was wrong
Fantastic distinctive growl though if you ever hear one .

Most of the marine Detroit Diesels are 2 stroke. (might even be all of them.)

I'm torn between wanting to power something huge with it or turning it into a coffee table...

Its not a new idea, the most novel incarnation was used by the germans as an aero engine during WW2.
It was a 6 cylinder, 12 piston supercharged 2 stroke diesel.
There is a better description here Junkers Jumo 205.

The same type of engine was used in the UK for commercial road vehicles by Tillings Stevens, known as the TS3.
There is a whole host of pictures and schematics here, Commer TS3 & Two Stroke Diesels, this is also good TS3 again.

It was also used by the british army in an armoured troop carrier, can't remember the name.

And finally, this is worth a look Napier Deltic, too complicated to explain. (Click on the image to see it work)

Detroits don't use opposing pistons as valves though, just standard poppet valvegear and a rootes blower to scavenge the cylinders.

My N47 Beemer may need one of those one day, sounds good for a diesel ...

Runs on petrol if needed, but always Compression Ignion I guess. Interesting crank and pivots on someof those pics. Knew about 2 strokes, but not that crank and pivot double piston malarkey ....

Good post
