Remember one particular Tyne class lifeboat getting knocked down & pushed backwards by a very large wave that stalled one engine and with the force of the water acting on the prop restarted it up in reverse .
Though it took the crew a few moments to work out what was wrong
Fantastic distinctive growl though if you ever hear one .
RNLI currently have some TYNE class lifeboats for disposal, nice for someone

For Sale- TYNES

We used to recon and supply L60's at Aviation Jersey, my first engineering job after leaving school. We had a test bed for running them up, sounded almost as nice as the RR Merlins. Our best customers for the L60's I think were the American offshore power boaters!

Friend of mine has 2 of these bad boys in his 53ft Hatterras motor yacht on the river Thames. It just fits in some locks and just passes under some bridges. Sometimes he has to ask the environment agency to lower the water levels to get through, now that's planning your trip

Took my son on a day trip on a heritage Deltic Diesel some years back. Fantastic sound but never saw a damn thing out the window for the smoke

I could not agree more! They used to power the Tjeld (Nato = Nasty) class MTB`s up to 45 knots (50+ knots without weapons). 2 x Napier Deltic 18 cylinder turbo diesel engines. 3140 hp x 2 = 6280hp

Me old man used to look after a couple of the earlier converted aero engines Napier sea lions when he was working as an engineer on the RAF air/ sea rescue launches in the late 1940s.
