Big adventure tomorrow wish us luck

Where (in the forum) do you talk about adventures and generally enthuse is it in this bit? We are collecting our boat in Southampton and taking it to Eastbourne by sea tomorrow morning. I am so excited, I only even viewed it on Monday for the first time! Buying has been fun but a lot of miles from London.

I have limited experience and I didn't think a long journey incorporating the Solent in Cowes week was an ideal time to go solo so we have 2 pilots, and I have spent all week plotting looking at channels and bouys and piloting notes, spoke to a few instructors in the area, I am coming out "between the forts" good news is tide is a good size and high when I am travelling so lots of clear water. However, it is so hard! I am sure there should be a program that doesn't just draw lines on maps but does "optimal" courses based on current and tide. And of course whatever I end up doing will nto be the same as I planned, but still. Where do I go to find out if there is an area being restricted tomorrow for a submarine training exercise? A lot of questions to answer...

My aim is to make it with me at the helm but I will immediately hand over if safety dicatates, and then once on the long reaches (whatever the rib word is for that) to share the workload too.

I have done Level 2, I have all the the gear, one pilot is local and very experienced, I know we are safe the thrill is I am still doing it myself and also of playing in my new boat, with my wife who loves boats probably more than me. It is a rib by the way 8m 2 x 200hp so quite fast but I am going to run it quite slowly to see if I might avoid filling up en route. I have the impression it might add a lot of time to have to pull into Brighton for petrol, I know if there are boats in front of you they take ages to fill??

Anyway I will share some pics I guess that goes under photos and happy to share my experience too, I suppose you all say "see you on the water"

corr lucky badger ,i guess everyman tailors his cloth i can barely afford to run my second hand sib and i have other ribnet members as pilots and guides lol...

yes this is the place enthuse and i would love to see some photo`s , as for filling up it only takes me 30 seconds to pump 12 litres

I had a look at your new baby at SDS yesterday and you will have no problems tomorrow. A good looking rib. If the weather is ok you will have an enjoyable cruise. Your skippers will have the choice of two routes. The shorter one via the channel off Selsy Bill or the longer one to Nab Tower or Outter Owers . that is the safer route if the weather turns nasty but your guys will know of that. I have done both routes many times in a 630 rib which I used to keep in Littlehampton.

I really struggled with this bit from the chart, I kind of figured the permanent channel after the Nab tower to be a big ship magnet that I would like to avoid as much as possible but I couldn't see a channel at Selsey, I've got a kind of dog-leg in my route at the moment, it's why I am happy about the tide too

Is there a bit of the forum about routes? Seems like I may be re-inventing a wheel too

@bingosucks I had several highly qualified volunteer pilots (RYA Yachmaster instructors and the like) the guy we are going with is best mate of our fitness instructor who also happens to have spent a lot of time in boats, they are very happy for us to cover expenses like food and travel and come along for the ride, no $ required. Which is good due to amount of petrol we will burn!

400 hosses is going to guzzle a small fortune , how many knots do you think you`ll get on wot

hoping to do pb2 later this year with a view to a rib upgrade next year , not a 400 monster but hopefully a 40 or 50 humber or sr4

The channel is marked on the charts and you will see the red and green buoys which mark the passage. If the sea is rough you will be better off taking the longer route and do not worry about the big ships as very few if any will be taking your route once you start heading eastwards.

Apparently a couple of boats have hit this underwater obstruction and it would be close to your likely route along the coast.

Those verado's are thirsty beasts. One boat I helm with a single 300 Verado will empty a 150l tank in around an hour (admittedly it is a very enjoyable hour )

That's why he's got help, asking for advice, plotted a course, and seems to be suitably cautious.
