The End of BOAT MART

Well, after several years of subscribing to Boat Mart, which was aimed more at my price level, (the lower end) i had a letter today telling me the magazine has ended.

I thought it strange that no copies has arrived since October and was about to ring when the letter arrived.

They have said that they are trying to find a buyer but will be refunding my remaining subsricption.

So did anyone have ideas on a decent magazine or is it really just the two mentioned on this thread??? Boat mart was the ideal.

Sports Boat and RIB has also stopped production - so that only leaves what was RIB Magazine / RIB International, specifically covering the rib market in the UK. They are rebranding (for the umpteenth time) to fill the space. I think all the "Mart" series which were largely about advertising boats etc for sale must be really feeling the pressure from faster, more interactive, cheaper internet advertising - especially as the credit crunch kicks in and people are less likely to buy high value goods.

I believe all printed journalism is taking a hammering at the moment - affected by the internet as well as the economic climate. If there is anyone crazy enough to try and make money from a printed magazine then its just possible that a new competitor could make some inroads whilst the industry adapts to the changing landscape. Of course if you were Mystic Meg you would predict whether Rib Mag has the ability to weather the storm before launching onto the scene.

He's not the first person to think that there is a niche opportunity and that it can't be that hard to put together a decent mag. Unfortunately, eventually reality always kicks in.

Well i've taken a punt on Rib Magazine. Its 20 for the year so not an astronimical price. I wonder how long this one will weather the storm for. As has been said, its nice to actually hold a magazine.

The thing is,we ARE a bit of a Nich'e Market. Reality these days means old 'HMS' is ( Like the rest of us) just trying to maximise his buisness base.
For a few quid a month it's still decent value if a glean one or two things of personal interest, and helps give you an overview of Power Boating in general.
In the past I have bought a RIB from the 'For sale' section, found plenty of info on cruises I've done, and made a few good contacts.
You are never going to agree with everything about EVERY subject in ANY publication, and in this tough economic climate I'm pleased to lend my support.Afterall they're one of the few (even with a modified Format) to keep it going.
