You don't typically want to undo the knot on the bow eye when the line is under load, but you may want to release the mooring buoy.

Yes the bowline is the best knot - however remember all knots reduce the strength of a rope.

If its good enough for the bow it is good enough for the mooring

If you are mooring for extended period then the concern would be chafing - so a proper spliced/shackled mooring strop is the long term solution

A bowline is probably the best knot, however leave a long tail as they have been known to shake apart when there is a very short tail.

We use a bowline with a hitch on the tail as it's a pretty permanent knot on our boats and it looks neat.

I'd use a re threaded figure of eight rather than a bowline. Bowlines are great under load but can fail when left loose.

I use a bowline in tree surgery and happily hang of it all day . Going this comment about the tail we leave a longish tail and put a figure of eight to stop this . Don't know whether it's applicable to your need or knot (sorry)

If you only ever learn to tie one knot....make sure it's a bowline

I use a bowline.
Remember that a bowline will reduce the breaking strength by 40-45%.
So don't use the smallest diameter rope.
The larger diameter will retain strength even after some chafe.

Take a second turn around the bow eye.
This minimises the chafing action.

PS If leaving your vessel for an expended period it is always a good idea to have a second line tied to another point on your vessel, as the bow eye could detach, line could untie/chafe through etc. No need to ask me how I know.

+1 On the very rare occasions I leave the boat unattended afloat, I use 2 lines; the painter from the bow eye & a second longer mooring rope from the deck cleat, usually to a different part of the mooring in-case the first bit lets go.

Clove hitches are pretty useful too, especially if tying up to a rope/runner as it's less likely to slide along.

Why not use three strand rope and attach the painter with a spliced loop around the u bolt, then trim the painter so it cannot reach the prop, and then back splice the loose end as well.
