Beggars Belief

Just finished going through the latest report from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) and a few incidents really do beggar belief.

In particular one incident involving a 7000 tonne container vessel after a drinks party on the bridge. Below is an extract from the report:

As a result there was no one on the bridge as she crossed the tracks of other vessels in the area and steamed towards the shoreline. There, 3 1/2 hours later, she grounded at full speed on a gently shelving, sandy shoreline. The vessel remained there, with her engine still running at full ahead, for a further 20 minutes before an officer finally came to the bridge. The master was then called and the propellor was stopped.
The master failed to respond to calls from the coastguard and initially he denied the the vessel was aground ........

Absolutely criminal. The container ship steamed for 3.5 hours with no one on the bridge at full power until it hit the sand bank. It could have collided with a yacht and no one would be any the wiser.

Kind of puts navigation lights and all round white light in perspective. Even if you're lit up like Blackpool illuminations... it doesn't matter a jot if no one is on deck.

LOL - might be! "Asleep on Watch" doesn't narrow it down much - there are a lot of these! I seem to recall a grounding where the skipper rebuffed CG assistance and managed to refloat the vessel on the next tide. The plan seemed to be, "don't accept help and is no incident".
