Been Robbed and RIB Vandalised

I have been off the forum over the winter not because I don't enjoy all the banter and advice but our holiday home got robbed last September and the idiots also damaged my RIB in the failed attempt to steal the outboard. So I just didn't fancy thinking about boating until now.

We usually bring the boat and kit back at the end of September or early October and had arranged to do so last year, in fact the weekend following the discovery of the theft.

Our family holiday home in West Wales has been trouble free for over 40 years but we had a call from a neighbour to say she had challenged two blokes leaving the property who said that they had been looking for gardening work. She is a retired school teacher so could identify one of the lads as an ex pupil.

We rang the police and also my parents headed down there only to find that they had forced a very secure garage door and stole tools, life jackets, fishing rods, kayak, oars, wetsuits, etc, etc!

The rib was very secure with hitch lock, post in drive, etc. etc. so they had just attempted to steal the outboard and made a mess of the attempt. First they had just cut through the steering cable, fuel line, etc. rather than just disconnecting them. Then faced with the anti theft bolts they had tried to saw it of the transom but either given up or were stopped by the neighbour after cutting about an inch into the transom. They had even cut through the fuel line below the seat rather than disconnect the line from the fuel tank.

I agreed a price for the repairs with a local one man 'boat yard' and said that I would be down last weekend to collect it so they could fix it anytime over the winter. Spoke to them 2/3 times on the run up to the bank holiday weekend and was told that it would all be ok. Got down there to find that it was untouched as 'they hadn't had time to do the repairs'. So I just collected it and got it home.

Now ready to get on with the repairs, probably with some advice from you guys , and actually feel a lot better as things are in my control and I am looking forward to doing the repairs oddly!

Oh and as an after note the police couldn't prove anything against the guy's..... but then you knew that didn't you.

Real shame but I think your taking a positive outlook and just getting on with it which in my opinion is the way to go. You will drive yourself mad dwelling on it and the police lack of evidence, well we all knew that was coming. So onwards and upwards and I hope it all goes well for you. Regards Jim

There's no 'consequence' in the uk, you see it, read about it and suffer from it, even when caught red-handed scum get a token community service order, patheticly small fine and go and do exactly the same to some other victim the next day, it's bolox

Thank you all for your support and encouragement.

It is rather tempting to get your own back but I think I will give it a miss, however, if they had got him I would have sued him for the damage and losses. I would then have sold the debt to the local Pikeys for a quid. Good enough for him.

you get stories like this that go on about how incredibly sensitive DNA testing is, but then when something happens to you the local plod claim they can't prove anything. Given how inept this pair seems to be it seems unlikely that they were dressed head to toe in protective gear to avoid leaving dna behind.

BBC News - The strange case of the 'time travel' murder

No idea if this is some "economic" decision to not spend the money getting the tests done etc. or what. Personally would expect that the costs for not aggressively following these things up will end up larger as they are likely to continue the "habit"
