BBC News Item on killcords

Coming into Fowey from Falmouth today we were stopped by the Harbour Master with a BBC film crew on board. They were interviewing boaters regarding kill cord usage and discussing whether it should be mandatory to wear them. They told us we were the only boat they'd seen that day using a kill cord (which ties in with our own observations over the previous two weeks: we hadn't seen any other boats using one. Even life jacket usage was thin). They also asked if we had a spare cord handy (we had) and whether we were aware of discussions regarding kill cord alternatives. We showed them our console mounted "Kill Cord" sticker sourced from a RIBnet member (but oops forgot your name. Sorry!)

Also with the BBC crew was a father whose son had been killed in a boating accident at Southampton some years ago. The father and the BBC guys were aware of RIBnet discussions on kill cord usage and the c80% against result of the mandatory usage poll kicked off by Nos. They asked if we had heard of the recent incident in Padstow and I tried to summarise the various constructive views expressed on RIBnet regarding kill usage and alternatives.

I'm not sure when or within what programme any footage will be shown.

Not sure if it is linked but we are filming tomorrow with the BBC 'Inside Out' program at Cobbs re killcords. It is a crew from Plymouth so suspect that it is the same thing - for showing in September sometime. Paul

I'm almost tempted to come down and watch. It'd be interesting to see what's said vs what's broadcast.

Me too!

Indeed it is/was the same team that came to Cobbs today as were filming in Fowey. The program is Inside Out which is a series that will run in September. We filmed some training around killcords and throttle systems and then did an interview

Regards, Paul

Did they give any indication as to the killcord use % they saw down in Fowey? Oddly, my experience there a few weeks ago was a total opposite of Leapy's-most were wearing their killcords. Quite a few were sans lifejacket though.

Incidentally, the lifejacket lockers on Fowey Town Quay are a fabulous idea.

No % but not high.

The LJ lockers from the RNLI seem a good idea. If you have feedback message keith_colwell@rnli.org.uk as he is responsible.

So if the HM has the time and energy to take a BBC film crew out, why would he not have the time to check people on a regular basis and take action (if there were a requirement??)

OR

If he is so concerned about the lack of KC usage, why go out on the water and educate the people not wearing LJ, or KC. (Education not regulation??)

If they did that they would need a massive team on the water i dont think they have the resource. It seems to me thinking only over poole harbour and surrounding areas that if you are wearing a lifejacket, kill cord and keep to the speed limits and use the channels correctly then you are in the small manority these days.
