Baystar hydraulic steering

Could someone please advise me on this

Baystar hydraulic steering

Can it be fitted to an engine rated at 200 up
If it is already fitted to said engine would you insist it be replaced with a suitable alternative
What system would you recommend

Yes it can, shouldn't be though as not rated for it.

Do you think I should insist on it being changed as the ram seals are leaking and I think I would rather have seastar

Ram seals leaking is not uncommon, my seastar had same problem. You can buy seal kits for the seastar in usa, I don't know about baystar. (I suspect any decent hydraulic place could fix these easily though)

If you think you can convince whoever you bought your boat from to pony up for a seastar then go for it, that outboard shouldn't have baystar anyway even if it were not leaking so you should have a decent chance if it was bought from a reputable dealer.

Yes I bought it from a reputable dealer
I am returning it on my next day off to have a few things rectified
The steering is the final straw for me tbh
If they don't replace it with the correctly rated setup then I will be asking for my money back
I assume the steering should be fitted as a matched helm unit and cylinder and not just replacing the cylinder
To be fair to the dealer they have been awesome to date regarding their customer service

Just had my Baystar steering put in matched with Yam100 4 stroke.

The Baystar being for under 150hp
Seastar for above 150hp

Even the Baystar helms come in different specifications. I had the Baystar plus, just an improvement in the bearings over the standard Baystar helm.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Baytstar helm that you have couldn't just be swapped for a Seastar helm. Whether the hoses/tubes are compatible with each unit........would need to ask, but this brochure seems to think they are.

Whether the engine rams are totally different, but could only guess that either is up to the job, just one is perhaps more inclined to hard commercial use.

Shame to give the boat back just for the steering.

Seastar rams are bigger and I think the hydraulic hose diameter too from memory, would need to check that out. that is why the helms are bigger too as you need a bigger mechanical advantage.

I'm sure some reading of the respective manuals would yield what you need on differences or a phone call as suggested.

Agree a shame to reject a boat you like for this but I'm sure you can sort something.

I paid a lot for the rib from a dealer and want it to be right
I do not want to reject it for the steering but I am not willing to pay an extra 800 ish for something that should have been correct from the start.

the bigger one has a higher pressure setting in the helm unit as well I believe

Yup, it should be right I agree.

little word of warning, when or if you get seastar cylinder then the new ones have clearly visible orange sweeper seals on the ram, if they don't have that it is old stock from somewhere. The new ones are better if you have choice in it.

I am a dick
I went up to the boat after my shift to take some pics of the leaky seals and guess what
Its not baystar
Its hyside admiral series steering
I do not know how I thought it was baystar
I am going to be feeling very sheepish on Monday now

It is still leaking I guess but may be fixable if you can get it apart? never heard of that steering before but maybe one of the other peeps has.

Edit, I assume it is hydrive admiral as that comes up on Google?

Seal kits look to be available for them, a good hydraulics shop probably has what you need on shelf though if you can't find kit in UK

Full seal kits for ram and also helm shaft from here. Replaced my ram seals last year and with help of YouTube relatively simple
The model of the ram should be on a sticker on it
I will send you the pdf manual for correct set up of the ram after removal of you need

Yes it's still leaking but the rod seems in food condition
There were no nicks or scores o the surface so I assume it's just a case of strip clean and replace
The vendor is happy to carry out the repair alongside a few other things like trim switch and sensor so I will let them do the repair
I googled them and seem to be pretty good systems.
I will be ordering some spares for future just in case lol
