Optima batteries are sealed, so water intrusion and electrolyte leakage are not particularly a concern.

I bought a battery box from west marine but it had two cheap looking plastic tie down brackets about 2inch long and 3/8 inch wide. Will they break easily?

Probably. Hit up a chandler (I think I got mine at Svendsen's in Alameda), and look for some stainless footman loops.

Actually, West Marine has them; they're probably closer to you.

I bought these from Amazon for $3.25 a piece for tying down the gas tank. Looks like they'll be good for battery as well.
